Congratulations Red Elephant Band and to your Director Larry Miller and all who support your efforts! Excellent selection of music and recordings. Audiences prefer shows where many people recognize the music. The color guard and majorettes demonstrated a very flowing presentation. The guard work was extremely varied and loved the rifle triple thrown in the show. The majorette added diversity and glamour to the show. The drill made very good use of contrary motion which is as “good as it gets” in visual display. The drill itself flowed logically and smoothly from one visual effect to another. I noticed that the drill correctly kept, as much as possible, the different sections together and everyone facing the press box. Enjoyed the three soloists on the field as well. The field commanders worked well together with one another and with the band. Enjoyed seeing a field commander dressed in “1960ish period” clothing. The percussion section, including the mallet players, added the “heartbeat,” extra dynamics, and “color” to the music. The wind section played their repertoire at an “excellent” level. You had very good dynamics and phrasing which are absolutely necessary and essential to your performance. I noticed that you entered the field and exited the field in an organized manner. This is important. Your show really starts in the minds of your audience and contest judges when you enter the field, and you will continue to be on the minds of audiences and judges as you exit the field. Smart move! Overall, I am very proud of your performance, and you should be very proud of it to! From your 1978-1982 Gainesville High School Band Director, Dr. Sam Shaw.
