If anything, he's less whiny sounding than Bob is when he sings, but I find him to be flatter as a result. Just my personal opinion. When asked how he decided on "Tomorrow is a Long Time" he responded "its my favorite!" It's such a song that few people are familiar with except die hard Dylan fans. As for me, I consider it a rare privelage to be alive while a Master like Dylan continues to play and record. I saw him in October 2023 in Chicago. The man is the embodiment of the term "living legend." I think few recognize the scope and depth of Dylan's tireless work. There's a story in the Nolan film "The Prestige" about an old Chinese magician who dressed in an elegant traditional oriental robe and made a fish bowl wkth a living fish appear before a stunned audience. Fellow magicians could not figure out how this feeble man wirh a limp pulled off the trick. Michael Caine's character explains that he was so determined to find out how the trick was done he followed the old man home, jumping on busses and crouching behind corners. He managed to get close enough to see into the old magician's apartment. There, he warched as the man lifted his robe where he used his thighs to hold the fish bowl wherever he went. Ive never forgetten that story. Its a perfect metaphor for the persona, the mask, the real Magus that Dylan is. Bob Dylan created a character, a whole unique identity with new name, a unique voice, an entire fully fleshed out human being. He put that mask on in the early 1960's and from what little information gets out about the man he never takes it off. I cannot conceive of a more profound and challenging commitment than that. After a while, whatever remained of Robert Zimmerman disappeared. His creation, Bob Dylan, lives and breaths and creates prolifically. He's a brilliant author of prose (read Chronicles and find out), he paints and his painting abilities evolved rapidly over a decade or so to the point where his latest "cinematic" series rivals all the great masters, he welds elaborate iron gates as works of art and to give to his friends as gifts to guard their properties, he hosted a radio show for years, he's written and starred in a festure film "Masked and Anonymous" he released another book "The Philosophy of Modern Song" that is the skeleton key to all lyricla and musical composition, his most recent album "Rough and Rowdy Ways" is Shakespearean in form and content. He won the Pulitzer and the Nobel Prize in Literature, an Oscar and many Grammys. Yet he keeps going on his "Never Ending Tour" playing for audiences around the globe, averaging 150 dates a year for the past 3 decades! For those fixated on Dylan's 1960's work theyre missing out on the BEST material the man ever produced. As an artist Dylan didnt just create a song catalog, he created an entire human being. A mysterious entity who is so enigmatic the very best biopic of him was titled "A Complete Unknown." Nobody understands what lies beneath because hes never dropped the mask. Perhaps thats because in the truest act of Magick he became the human being he invented. As a singer songwriter myself who picked up the craft because of Dylan, I discovered that the longer I'm steeped in his material the more I'm drawn to his work that is on the periphery of popularity. "Tomorrow is a Long Time" happens to be one of my favorite songs as well. It's a painfully beautiful love song that if you're listening closely enough to the lyrics should knock the breath out of you. Chalamet's choice in Tomorrow is a Long time speaks volunes about the depths of the character he probed. Perhaps for the sake of pragmatism, Timmy kept his research focused on the period the film focuses. If he didnt he may have integrated parts of Dylan into his performance that weren't born yet during the brief timeframe of the film. As an actor, that was for the best. Yet I i am confident that having delved so deeply into this mercurial Mage, Chalamet is going to emerge with new powers as a performer that will stagger audiences with the depth and scope he brings. He spent 5 years building this portrait and when one stays in a persona like that long enough it doesn't easily fade. Thats why its not surprising he performed Dylan's music at SNL. He's probably written a number of originals by now but it must be hard to let go once one has gone so deep. If were all lucky, Chalamet will have gone deep enough that he discovered Dylan's secret; you must become your character. As Dylan ages he's begun referencing the persona he created more directly in his work. In his last album, theres a song called "My Own Version of You" about a man building another man with body parts stolen from graves that he brings to live with a jolt of electricity, a Frankenstein reference and a nod to his process of self creation "I'm gonna bring someone to life, someone for real, someone who feels the way I feel.." and "I'm gonna bring someone to life, in more ways than one, don't matter how long it takes, it'll be done when it's done." Not only has Zimmerman created Dylan, his force of gravity is so strong, his influence has penetrated and penetrates artists to this day. Chalamet makes a fine vessel to channel Dylan.

This was one of the most moving things I’ve ever watched live. There are some people who you just know are touched by a little magic, but they still understand, they know what it’s like. Even with all his fancy fashion, his money and success and lifestyle…chalamet (and Bob Dylan) as an artist will always have this universality in whatever piece he shares. Everyone is the same. At the end of the day everybody yearns for what this song sings. Call me para social. Call me unmotivated with a dearth in motivation with my own art and my own story. But, this guy is my hero. I’m glad he’s here. I’m glad I’m here while he’s young and contributing to the world in a way I find so meaningful.

I first heard this song covered by Rod Stewart when I was 8 years old. Every Picture Tells a Story. My Dad heard me playing that album over and over and subsequently bought me a copy of Nashville Skyline for Christmas. Been a Dylan fan ever since. I also can't express how much I appreciate how cool my Dad was.

Bob Dylan songs always make me sad. Beautifully sad and emotional.

I know! Me too. So many of his songs like this one create atmosphere simply yet vividly, and bob explains an image so easily it’s like he’s putting his thoughts right into my head. And his songs are so beautiful that they ARE sad, but sad in a universal way always hinting at how fleeting this all is.
@canadianhappyinitalytruest65568 күн бұрын
@@PaulC-Drums fleeting is the exact correct term. Thank you. Bob Dylan even talks about how his songwriting skills were fleeting and he doesn't know how they happened... you've really chosen a perfect word here that gives a real sense of the melancholy. And somehow you know you're a more complete person for recognizing the fleeting quality of all this in life but it still feels... sad. Anyway, thanks for your feedback. Cheers

Just want to say that while of course TC may be talented, he was given everything he needed to BECOME talented. These performances are the final product after years and years of study and practice and learning and practice and play and support. We all have so much untapped magic/talent that we never get to express/realize; we're stuck in the grind just surviving. Just a shout-out to all the incredible talent waiting in each of you watching this video.
