it was a little dry yeah but it was awesome. the dude is upset about strange coats and he has a ridiculous coat. it's humor 101.. it's just a good creative concepts for a sketch. I'd call it a fine sketch. not the greatest sketch I've ever seen but definitely not the worst.

Generally speaking it's a fancy restaurant thing, so it's not the coat check itself that is expensive, it's just associated with higher class dining

It is a more common thing in colder climates, but even then it really depends on what type of restaurant you are at. There are restaurants in places so cold you have to wear a ski coat everywhere that don’t have a coat check, even if it is a nicer restaurant. I think it partially has to do with if the building has room for a coat check and that depends on if it was intended to be a restaurant when built. I’ve also been to a country club in California that has a coat check, so it really is dependent on the place.

The show was particularly weak in light of the fact that you've got a host who (should) know what he's doing.

i think Fred's comic sensibility works well in small doses. It can carry a half hour show (Portlandia), but that's also a smaller cast and the audience expectations are different and the sketches are less broad. I don't think SNL is a great vehicle for Fred's humor - at least as a host.
