To be honest with you. I don’t think Dave was going off script… well May be… he did… I don’t know for sure. But… the cast and crew (including the writers) pride themselves on making each other laugh and it’s extra credit if they make them break live on camera. They have cue cards that the actors read spontaneously without knowing what is on it. Seasoned veterans of SNL like Will Ferrell don’t like to break all… then there is Jimmy Fallon and Pete Davidson who break all the time and don’t give a damn. There is a whole compilation of SNL breaking character on KZbin (it’s funny like live bloopers)

It's his voice leaking into the other mics that don't have a pitch effect, making two pitches. You can hear it sometimes when the other actors talk too, their voice leaks into his mic with the pitch effect, especially Chocula, who is closest to him. Since it's all done live, the audio guys are mixing it live, trying to mute the effect mic and non-effect mics on the fly, which is even harder when certain people *cough*Dave*cough* go off-script and ad lib.

@@AdmiralLando ....the way I always saw it, was that pete was supposed to use the italian accent after dave's line of "look at count chocula's lips." only dave being dave, probably didn't think it would get a laugh... and so doing what he does best (and what normally gets guests ban from the show), he went off script to get a better laugh. pete obviously breaks, but quickly applies the italian accent to finish the skit. that's what I always thought.
