Such a distinctive tone and after-taste to his comedy. Very pleasant. Does Mullaney ever vere into more substantive insights about the human condition, even obliquely ? e.g., His 19 yr. old fantasy vs. maturity ...and 'Old-Timey stuff'/Connecticut references maybe ...

There is nothing special about that particular line, he just had to re-establish the theme (which is the joke). There are enough noteworthy jokes in there, including that one, but that line as an aside is pure formal necessity (because that part took so long to say). You're incredibly dumb and impressionable, like a baby shown jingling keys or something.

My hubby just had to do one of those tests with the stop sign and I was cracking up because it gave it to him 4 times and he was getting so angry. Then i pulled up this Mulaney classic, and it changed his mood from upset to laughter in seconds. That's a gift I tell you.

It’s what all comedians do.. especially during interviews. It can get kind of boring/weird watching an interview of someone and hearing the same rehearsed skit every time

I had ...something... of an occurrence like that once. I thought my best friend had just up and screwed me over after I bought him new tires in an emergency. I figured our friendship was over so I never called him. Turns out he got married to a psycho who was insanely jealous and overly controlling to the point where she wouldn't let him see his old friends. - He hasn't had the best of luck when it comes to relationships.

I've been watching SNL for over 40 years. This is the ONLY monologue that ever made an impression on me. The gazebo bit was pure genius. Mulaney's timing and delivery are impeccable.

I know! His timing and wording are perfect, but he also has the ability not just to make everyday things funny but also notice a date on a random structure and realize that yes, they actually built a gazebo in the middle of the Civil War!

This is the best SNL monologue I've ever seen. Normally the monologues feel as if they've been thrown together at the last minute, and are embarrassing to watch. Mulaney, being a writer, clearly crafted every word of this carefully, and it shows.

I know what you mean. Even other actors tend to have monologues that make you think, "Yeah, you're definitely more comfortable in a role of some sort." You can tell John is very comfortable being himself in front of crowds.

Jess Liu I can’t put my finger on it either. The material isn’t THAT good but he “sells” it so well and sounds like old-timey radio person. He also speaks very loudly but “conspiratorially” like he’s about to tell you something he knows you want to hear... And always wearing a suit and having “politician” hair works really well

Neither had I! I only heard of him after someone tweeted his robot skit. He's now my favourite comedian. Of course, that kind of sucks when you live in the UK and know that he's never going to tour here. 😂

There's like 3 or 4 of them, and also a brand new special called _John Mulaney and the Sack Lunch Bunch_ which I really cant describe...you have to just seek it out for yourself. It's like...a loose parody of 1970s/1980s _Sesame Street_ and _The Electric Company_ and that sort of show...

larshoneytoast33: If you're going to correct people, at least use proper sentence structure. You look like an ass with everything you failed to capitalize. You failed at punctuation as well. I only police the grammar and spelling of those policing others' grammar and spelling. I'm still an ass, but only to people showing theirs first.

JR S. I wasn't actually attacking grammar and punctuation. I was pointing out people behaving like asses online over something that only affects the person commenting. Free speech gives everyone license to attest to their own ignorance. Maybe to me grammar and punctuation are as grave as misspelling, though not as grave as the deterioration of civil discourse. The deterioration of reading comprehension concerns me as well.

I only knew John Mulaney as the writer for Bill Hader's "Stefon" character and had never seem him perform himself. Wow. I've been over stand-up comics for years, but I could watch this routine over and over.

How tf can you be "over" stand-up comedians? This experience should have shown you how ridiculous that is. Stand-Up Comedy is so ridiculously diverse and each one is so different. That's like saying you're "over" music.

Him and Nick Kroll in “Oh, Hello” is still a highlight of my recent Broadway shows. It was so much fun. He’s a real talent. I don’t know that there is a sitcom vehicle available for his style of comedy. Maybe a successor to Colbert?
