The true love story. No other pairing in this show can compare or come close to this. I don't care what the producers, directors, screenwriters, and actors believed because characters often make use of the people that give them life to tell their own stories, and Merlin and Arthur might not have been created with that goal in mind but what they bring to life on screen is the most organic and overpowering love we could've witnessed. I dare say it surpasses the physical and the lovers'. In fact, I don't think any of us can fully define it or name its boundaries. We just know it's something special and unparalleled. Arthur has no reason to return since Albion exists no more. The only thing left standing is Merlin. What else is he rising for if not for him? Arthur will rise from the "dead" when Merlin needs him most...when Merlin's pain outweighs his love. No wonder it takes them so long... He will live on because Merlin lives on, and Merlin lives on because Arthur lives on as well in some way. Merlin lives with the sole intention and purpose of being reunited with Arthur - not the once and future king but the man, always the man. In the end, what we got was an implicit happy ending. These two are destined to be together, one way or another, and together they will be. The once and future soulmates.

it puzzles me to no end too. Not being a teenager anymore, having watched so many great shows and films but this 'Merlin' show and especially that kind of Merlin portrayed by Colin gets me every time on a level I cannot control (Bradley does a great job too ofc). The psychological stimulus, the chemical processes in the brain when watching Colin as Merlin is something I can't explain - not even to myself. It certainly is unique in unsettling me.

I just realized despite the surface platonic nature of these two’s relationship, in a different time and age, they could have been lovers. I mean these two have the most realistic potential for rediscovering their love for each other, in a romantic lense. I mean there are a lot of canon ships in various fandoms that don’t even have half the potential Merlin and Arthur do. They just care about each other so deeply, it is evident in the show. If they were given options to branch out from their duties and responsibilities which was so cumbersome and enormous, they would have had space to rethink their relationship😢. I think when Arthur finally returns, both Merlin and him will have time to rediscover things. Realistically, I think Merlin would have centuries worth of trauma watching the people he loved die while he stayed immortal. And Arthur will also have deal with a lot of issues. All in all, they’ll have each other in the end regardless of how much time it would take. Merlin fans have to take comfort in that thought because in an alternate universe or maybe even in this world, Arthur could be already reunited with his Merlin and trying to figure out the world yet again.❤😢
