Saturn S-Series Coolant Change

This video shows the procedure I used to exchange the coolant in my 2002 Saturn SL2. The original coolant in these, at least 2000's on was called Dexcool. I am flushing the system and replacing it with the more common glycol coolant/ antifreeze.

Just bought a south Florida 2001 SC2 with 64500 miles on the clock. Thanks for putting this together. I did not know about the engine block drain so that was a big help. Getting the coolant and coolant flush today in anticipation of another 65 degree day on Tuesday.

After watching this I feel like I know less about changing the coolant than I did before I started. Not because the video is poorly done, the video is actually awesome and informative. It just made me realize how much I honestly don't know, and trying to stack all this information together before I go out to my car is not working. So I think I'm dumb to this.

I just bought a 1997 sl2 and I'm doing a flush today. I had no idea that bolt was below the thermostat housing, it will make the job a whole lot easier. Thanks for the informative video!

I believe that as your engine has an aluminum block, the correct antifreeze is the orange one.

Thank you for this video. I might never have located the drain bolt on the engine block without your help. I have chosen to do a full flush and replace with Peak Universal fluid (which is sort of dayglow yellow/orange) on my recently acquired 2002 Saturn SL1 with 150K miles. It's service record is unknown, so I am doing a full fluid replacement, as I come up to speed. I do not want to stick with Dexcool. Honda didn't like it, so neither do I.

These Saturns are great I had a 1996 and gave it to my father in law he's driving it with 240,000 miles on it and i replaced it with a 1999 sl 1. The SL 1 i have now is great the only issue is it tends to burn rich so about every two months I have to take the EGR valve off and clean it up with some PB blaster then put it back together.

We once mixed coolants (not knowing) on our Saturn SC1 and it made this horrible smell... like fish. We couldn't figure out what happened until we brought it to our mechanic and when he drained the coolant, he said it made the whole shop smell like "a big ol' cod." LOL!!!!

I once topped off the dexcool with the green antifreeze (out of on the road necessity) and the next day the aluminum head cracked. The mechanic told me that it was the mixture of these two types of antifreeze that caused the head to crack.

Good video. A much faster/efficient and more cost effective way is to just take out the thermostat, remove the radiator hose near the air box and open the drain cock which is accessible form the top, then just run your garden hose through all open radiator hoses and coolant reservoir. Takes 15 minutes max against 2 hours . Same results and much, much safer. I also put block and head sealer in it just as an added precautionary for the one day dreadful unthinkable warped/cracked head.
