I absolutely agree with you about people saying oh he goes too low. You don’t hear anyone say oh that soprano went too high, there is nothing wrong with showing your range. Geoff is so talented, his voice is profound, his tone so pure and clean. His smooth rich tone brings me back over and over and over again. So to the naysayers, don’t listen. If you don’t like it go listen to something else. Thank you for a great reaction!

i love deep notes but in some cases there are low low notes that are placed a bit "randomly" and don't fit in into the flow of the song and the harmonies. in this case it is the note at 9:30 that sounds great but doesn't really fit if you aren't used to it. it just feels "unnecessary" low and it might be only the way he sung the note and not the note itself, but it is really standing out of the whole song and there were lower notes in the backgrounds before that get most of the time ignored or overglanced because they just fit and make sense there. on the otherside the last note of the song makes sense again because it is closing the song of with a bang and thus is allowed to be the way it is.

Yup. He labels them "low bass cover" bc that's what it will highlight.

Chris Rupp said that Geoff has the cleanest bass he has ever heard. Clearly his opinion comes from a musical aspect so he knows what he's talking about. This was my favourite reaction so far. I always laugh when I watch your videos, but this turned into a "Try not to spit my coffee out!" I passed...Barely😅 Have a great day!

I love that Geoff doesn't always take his voice to the basement and he knows it's not always necessary, there are several songs where he just stays on the surface. But my God, it feels so good when he gets down there!

You may notice that Geoff used more verses that other people’s videos. That’s because he went to the Tolkien books to get the other verses that weren’t used in the movie where the music came from. Just more of his attention to detail. Plus - in the information under the video, he urges people to read the book!

And you don't notice it first, while listening, but the beauty of Laynes violin in the background just enhanced the beauty of the singing.
@maeco7
@maeco7 2 жыл бұрын
I don't think that's Layne's violin - Geoff always credits everyone who helps with his videos in his video description boxes, and he doesn't mention Layne at all for this one. Geoff usually uses instrument plug-ins to create and arrange all the instrumentation himself.
@carinarodebak9419

@maeco If I've spread misinformation I stand corrected and apologize. I read other people's comments,who I know are Patreons and have access to BTS material, about Layne playing. Who/whatever responsible, I think the subtle playing adds to the beauty of the piece and is a good choice by the arranger.
@maeco7

@@carinarodebak9419 I'm a patron too and can pretty confidently say Layne wasn't involved, but either way, I completely agree - the strings are a beautiful addition. Geoff is an amazing arranger!

“Medieval” is the word I think of. I just LOVE Geoff’s solo stuff. You can really hear his epic range then because he sings ALL of the voices. He’s truly a star. What a gem in the Acapella world. Great reaction, btw. You had stank face for daysssss. Geoff does that to people. 😂🖤🔥

You crack me up every time.... especially when I know what's coming next and you don't. Loved your Peter Barber impression! Another reactor replayed that last note about a dozen times before he was able to talk about what he'd just heard. Next react to his Shenandoah. Completely different look and feel. It's not as popular, doesn't have as many views, but his wife, Kathy, likes it, so he was happy with it.

This song was my introduction to Geoff back when it trended on YT, and after obsessing with his solo works, I realized he was in an acapella group, so I binged them. Just yesterday, after over a year talking about them, I finally got my husband to listen, and as we went to bed, he admitted he had spent the rest of the evening binging VoicePlay videos. Success!

I adore his lows. I want them as often as possible. He has a beautiful voice in any range but damn those hit the spot and make my spine tingle. It’s amazing to me (as a first soprano) to hear someone go that low and not break their voice of manipulate it or anything. It’s something i can only dream of doing, so seeing it done perfectly is a true joy.

Most musicians react to what the fans react to.. So when people say more Geoff, more low notes please etc. Then that's what the musicians do... When people get out their mini keyboard or pitch perfect... It's in anticipation of him hitting a super duper low.......i personally love a lovely rounded low note when they suit the song.... I would probably say it was overdone if it was all about the bass... (sorry couldn't resist that one)... If that was all he did... But that's not all he can do... He can harmonise, he can sing baritone and he can sing tenor.... Personally I love his baritenor range. It's so soft.... Maybe the "haters/complainers" are jealous and have to whinge to make up for their own lack of whatever... Keep dropping it Geoff.

Great reaction and totally agree. We all listen to what we love - for me, Geoff's bass is number 1, and I never get too much of it. That said, I love his baritone range. Bottom line, his voice is gorgeous, and his skills in handling it are superb. Geoff's voice is usually melted butter & warm silk. BUT: if you want it with a little gravel, the most outrageous deep passage I've heard is in the Critical Role Mini. It's truly a do not miss. 60 seconds.

Geoff has told us that he does the deep bass very very softly, and lets the microphone and post-production do the amplification as needed. He also said that he got some help from Tim Foust to get to his lowest notes. I LOVE that these guys are all friends and help each other with tips and techniques. After Home Free, my next favourite a cappella group is Voiceplay. And Geoff's multi-part singles like this are so much fun and so very well done. I quite enjoyed "Monster Mash" because it was fun.

To me what sets Geoff apart from everyone else is that he isn't a natural bass but a self taught bass singer. The effortlessness in which he sings you can't tell unless you've seen his how to sing bass video in his KZbin channel.
@johndeeregreen4592
@johndeeregreen4592 2 жыл бұрын
That is just not true. Nobody who isn't a true bass can hit an F#1 chest note... not going to happen. You can extend your bass range with techniques like subharmonics, but your chest voice is what it is; vocal cord length and thickness determine that. A low bass will normally be considered anyone who can hit a strong B1 in chest voice; Geoff's lowest chest note is an entire 5th lower than even that!

Glad you got round to this. It's brilliant. I love your reactions. You're so much fun. Don't worry about the name. Some say they're Geoffettes,, which sound a bitt girly to me, so I prefer Geof and the Geofftones,. Anyway whatever you call them, it's a thing he does so well. Every time he says that "cold" in the first line, I actually get the shivers. I feel the cold. Is it me? Oh and the other thing with Geoff is, I hear every single word, clearly. I really appreaciate that. Don't worry, I've heard men say they're ready to turn after listening to Geoff. :) It's not only the ladues who fall for him. I think tribal is a good word. It's earthy, and subterranean, as befits The Hobbits.

This is the song he said was WAY BETTER at the end of WAY DOWN. Same set at PattyCake Productions and is The Dragonborn Comes. This took him most of the day as with each costume change he had to shave a little more for each new facial hair placement. He did the unshaven Geoff first then each of his clones. That last breathy note is like Tim's last breathy note in Ring Of Fire.

I only remember one song where I thought "well, I could've lived without one or two of those loooow notes", but that was only that specific song. Other than that I don't agree. I feel like he is very capable of keeping the perfect balance. Especially when he uses his full range. If he didn't I wouldn't like it that much. His low range (not the subharmonic low, low range, but the one you call his sweet spot) resonates with me and kinda calms me down. I'm also trying to find the right word for this song, but struggle to find it even in my language. The best thing I can come up with is that it gives me a kinda soothing and meditative medieval/fantasy feeling. Almost Gregorian chant-y (with the addition of that gorgeous sounding violin). Especially when he's just humming. If I'd listen to him humming all day I would be the calmest person on earth.

Plus the bass drops are what most fans want to hear, I certainly do, love them! But I don't believe Geoff overdoes them, you usually only get the big bass drops once or twice in a song and for me they are balanced out with his wonderful higher range in the harmonies! 🙂👍

I like the Tim/Peter version better, but he does a good job. Thanks, Saucey! And it's not that he goes too low, it's that he just "drops" out of the blue, or with no lead up. And sometimes it's just out of place. But in this particular song, there really isn't any such thing as too low.

I think the word you were looking for was primal, Saucey. I also think that the issue some folks have with Geoff, and I agree to some extent, is that the awe factor is much less than it once was because of over use of his low end. It's predictable. We know he's going to do it in a song, it's just a matter of when, not weather. Maybe awe factor isn't quite right. Shock factor, maybe? I'm sure you know what I mean. Either way, it's not that it's over used in any one song, though I'm sure there would be those who would disagree with that, it's the just you can almost count on Geoff hitting, at least, one super low note in any given performance. A matter of when he's going to do it, and not weather or not he's going to do it. For me, though, it's more a case of Kate Lott, from Voctave. She's the super high soprano everyone is in awe of when they hear her. Watching the Disney Love Medley Voctave did with Kirsty and Jeremy, do you remember his reaction to Kate's sustained high notes? The huge smile, the head shake? That's more my reaction to Geoff's low notes anymore. I know it's coming. It's awesome when it gets here. There is no way *I* would ever be able to do anything of the kind. But, it's such a joy to hear someone who can both do it and do it well. So, I think that's where most people are at when it comes to "complaints" about Geoff's low notes being everywhere. "Oh, he's at it again!" and not "Not THIS again." I could be wrong, of course. It's been known to happen. :P Fun reaction, as always. Catch you in the next one!

Do you think the 'other' Geoffs get upset when one of them doesn't share the lead? 😆
