Yup. You’ve made gruel 😂 (at the very beginning when it’s just grain and water) A Pakistani (maybe Pashtun) variation of this is haleem I think? Maybe not though? I’ve never made haleem without lamb. Maybe y’all make an entirely different dish with lamb and groats. I make haleem, but all I eat are the toppings. And my favorite variation of this type of dish is cheese grits, a la my grandmother 🤣. Loved hearing about your grandmother and how she made this for you.

gruel LOOOOOOOOL!! I was watching a traveling youtuber (dale phillip) and he was showing us around Pakistan and ate Haleem. Ever since, I have been hinting to my Pakistani Canadian friend (YES YOU FATIMA IF YOU'RE READING THIS) to make me Haleem. It looks honestly so much more rich and flavorful than Jareesh but yes similar. SHE HASNT MADE IT FOR ME YET however she did introduce me to my first ever Pakistani high tea party, which, WOW, puts any other tea party to absolute shame. What are the haleem toppings? Is it also onions? I've actually searched Talabat for Haleem but nothing. NOTHING FATIMA. I appreciate your comments about my Grandmother. Thank you. KZbin isnt very good at notifying me about comments, I see you left a comment on another video where we last spoke! I will go see it now! Thank you

@@SaudiFoodinEnglish 🤣 no worries about replying when you have time/remember to check. My Pashtun friend, his first Ramadan with us, I got his mama and asked what she’d like us to cook for him? Haleem and this freaking AMAZING chicken dish with walnuts and pomegranate. I’ll poke around and see if I can find a name (or if you’re really curious about the chicken, I can share his mama’s recipe) The toppings - fresh chopped cilantro, parsley, some fried onions - like, sautéed in a TON of butter until they’re browned and crispy and then the oniony butter - minced green chili, lemon wedges. I don’t know if this is traditional or just my friend’s fav but we have diced cucumber and tomato and some labni. Haleem is REALLY heavy to me? My fav iftar dish I think is harira. (I’m not religious at all, but I really do have a degree in anthropology/archaeology and I love exploring traditions of all kinds. But food and music are endlessly fascinating to me. I plan holidays for our little herd. No way I was going to plan for Thanksgiving and NOT Ramadan. And Nowruz 🤣)

Well, this looks delicious! 🤤 I live in the Sonoran Desert so peppers are just part of the culture and they grow very well here so I started wondering how they got to KSA, turns out it was the spice routes starting in the 16th century. Then I wondered about butter/ghee because I didn't think cows were native to the desert. Originally, butter was definitely from sheep and goats, they think it was a bit of an accidental discovery in ancient Africa by nomadic people when cream was put in a bag, tied to an animal for transport and it got jostled into butter and that method spread through Africa. I wonder what that tastes like! Cow butter has been in the north for a long time, so long that an ancient Greek comic poet derisively referred to Northerners as "butter-eaters"😂 (Southerners liked their oils). Anyway, really enjoyed watching you make this dish🙂

This truly must be the most interesting comment I have ever read! I won't lie I had to google the sonoran desert! Arizona/mexico? Some pictures showed up in my search. At least you have some beautiful cactus lol. But how do peppers grow in your desert?!? Your cactus look like the ones in cartoons where they poke them and water streams out LOL. The photos look beautiful. Ours is just sand. Kuwait seems to be also just sand and some trash and a broken sofa next to a sickly camel. You make me want to milk a cow with you in a desert and form ghee while eating chili peppers. Do you have cats? I adopted 3 Siamese siblings.

Looks good may I ask what is a Maggi Cube
@SaudiFoodinEnglish5 ай бұрын
Hi there debb!!! Of course my love you can ask anything! It's a popular brand of bouillion cube here! Basically a chicken stock cube. You dissolve it in hot water and it makes instant chicken stock. I've seen them in walmart sometimes in the Hispanic food section!
