The L1A1 SLR has been a reliable 7.62mm Assault Rifle used by the Australian and New Zealand military since the Vietnam War era. Interestingly, the Samoan Police are making good use of them for ceremonial purposes. The Chinese QZB 5.8mm may be considered an upgrade for the Samoan National Security platforms looking forward? Or the newly 6.8mm US military upgrade may be considered an option looking forward? For ceremonial purposes though, the SLR is very suitable especially for the catafalque party ceremony. The American Garand M1, is used for the American ceremonies. But, in saying this, the Samoan Police is always very impressive. The Samoan Police Services uniform is featured highly in the worlds most unusual unitorms list. I wonder why? Looks normal to me.🙂 In saying this, I would sincerely wish to honour my Great Grandfather, Le Afioga Tuiletufuga Liuomavaega, from Apia Village, (1898-1939) as amongst the founding father's of modern Samoa, particularly, for being amongst the Pioneering Samoan Police Service Officers whom had initially formed the Samoan Police Services during the New Zealand occupational Administration and the subsequent colonial period until his passing in 1939. His service was instrumental during the Mau movement, serving his Nation, albeit, under the then New Zealand Colonial Administration. Also, I would acknowledge my Uncle the late, Le Afioga Masoe Fidow, Superintendant of the Samoan Police Service amongst my many Samoan Family current and former serving Samoan Police Officers.
