It is noteworthy that a lot of material ascribed to Saurophaganax is indeed a gigantic allosaurid at the end of the day, so not too too much really has changed from that and there was still a truly huge theropod running around in the Morrison. And given growth rates differed from Allosaurus so much, it is still possible it might wind up in a distinct genus all the same.

This is already out of date. The paper is getting heavy criticism by theropod and sauropod experts. The vertebrae still show more in common with allosaurs then sauropods. The only thing leaning in favor of this is the new specimen Leviathan having the femur of a juvenile sauropod being assigned with it. Saurophaganax is still a theropod. However the original size of Leviathan was toned done from 10 tons down to 8.5 tons. Which is still huge, but makes sense for what we now think is a pack hunting apex predator. It still blows me away that we now have the largest known pack hunter ever. Yes wile the study on Saurophaganax being a sauropod is recent. It dose hold water with a lot of bones being assigned to it when there not. However with all the recent remains found, we can actually place what bones are what. Brian Curtis has pointed out which bones are not from Saurophaganax where the chimera, but the big thing here is that Saurophaganax is still valid but is not being turned into a sauropod. The new sauropod has yet to be named, nor have the bones been studded in depth to find out what family it belongs to. This is a good video, but the paper stresses this might not be 100% true and with more material this could be wrong. Its not fact . . . YET. Maybe in the future. But when both sauropod and theropod experts are saying there are problems with the papers, i think it shows.

@ej2u54525 күн бұрын
@DeywanLigma KZbin does not allow me to send links. I posted this comment once with the source links and it got deleted. If you look up a lot of paleontologists discussing the paper online, its falling under heavy scrutiny. Plus I don't really care much about Saueophaganax. A matter of fact I would prefer it if it was a sauropod. However when the top paleontologists are discussing whether this is true or not, and even the guy who studies allosaurus species and specializes in it is also bringing up problems with it. Yaaaaa I'ma say it's up for debate. I'm still leaning more towards the theropod idea though. Edit: I should probably explain why.its falling under scrutiny. It's a lot of jargon, that I don't really understand. But from what my college professor says, only freshmen paleontology so . . . it's still kinda hard to read. He says it basically boils down to the problem being. Even if the hallow type wasn't sorophagonaxe, all the recent material found on the creature would have to dispel this. Which the people in the paper did not have access to the newest material found of over 20 new individuals found. It's literally just off of the Halo type and a couple other fragmentary remains. That is literally the biggest problem with the paper.

That's exactly my thoughts about Leviathan, a 13 meter long 8 ton heavy theropod would basically be a Giganotosaurus in the Jurassic and I ain't buying that. BUT Leviathan was named after a vertebra (afaik) and those were exactly the remains identified to be a Sauropod, so it all checks out. Having said all that, many of the Allosaur remains indicate an animal that could still be the largest predator in the Jurassic

I would greatly welcome saurophaganax as Allosaurus Maximus, I already was on the part that considers Saurophaganax as an Allosaurus Species so with the fact that some of its parts were just a sauropod i see it very possible that Saurophaganax will be Allosaurus Maximus and honestly i dont see the 8.3 ton S.Maximus "Leviathan" being so far fethed seeing Allosaurus based on its other species is anywhere from 3-5 tons so if we look at saurophaganax which is 5+ tons, big saurophaganaxes would be around 7 tons and one massive saurophaganax reaching 8.3 tons is plausable in my opinion

Great video, man, but about this logic of the impossibility of a giant Jurassic theropod existing, I really don't agree. There were already many giant animals at the time and before the Jurassic period itself, so a 12-13 meter theropod would be possible. And also the only fossils that were really treated as belonging to another genus were those of the sauropods themselves, but a good part of them are from a huge allosaurid, so we still have hope.
@leaguerpaleontology23Ай бұрын
Biggest Jurassic theropod is Torvosaurus which is 11.5 meter long. Jurassic theropods don't reach 12-13 meters because their less evolved. Only some of the largest cretaceous theropods did.

Theropods did NOT reach sizes comparable to Carcharadontodaurus until the time that they existed. There wasn't anything that large some number of millions of years before them. The theropods of the Cretaceous would've absolutely dwarfed the carnivores of the Jurassic.
@M3g4l0d0n4Ай бұрын
@@renna4216 In fact, evolution is not predictable and most people know how it works. Just because the Jurassic only had less evolved dinosaurs, it doesn't mean there was a giant theropod like Saurophaganax.
@sentinel_nightcrawler20 күн бұрын
@M3g4l0d0n4 then other therapods would've evolved near that weight class. Larger size needed more food, and more food can support the rest of the therapod weight class.
