Actually, if you figure for yearly inflation that would be $478.60 in today's money. That means that your uncle spent an entire weeks pay on that rifle. It's not that times are different, it's that the people today are MUCH more entitled. In the old days people lived on MUCH less but were more thankful for it. The average house back then was half the size of today's average house but the families were twice as big! It's about perspective.

$28 wouldn't get you one box of ammo for the 300 Savage today. It might only get about 10 rounds intoday’s market and in NYS you now add another $2.50 for a background check just for the ammo. Even if Savage produced the firearm today, you ciukdn’t expect to pay less than $1200.

@cerneysmallengines7 ай бұрын
@alexk3678 no... its not. if you read the history on 308/7.62×51, you will read that they STARTED with a 300 savage, gave the shell less taper and a longer casing to better compete with 30-06.
@@cerneysmallenginesI was gonna ask, since I'm not american, what the significance of the .300 savage is. Seems like a pretty modern round for it's time, and judging by the comment section, a lot of people use it for deer. Epitome of "if it ain't broke don't fix it"
@cerneysmallengines7 ай бұрын
@comradeurod9805 the 300 savage was designed in the early 1920s. 30-06 at the time was held under a German patent, it's mighty awkward to be fighting a war against Germany in the 1910s and paying a royalty for every rifle chambered in 30-06 and every round manufactured to your enemy. 30-30 and 45-70 were still very popular rounds, but savage had an idea. the power of a 30-06 in the size of a 30-30. their first attempt was the 303 savage. the 300 savage proved much more effective. though not as powerful as a 30-06, it was still more powerful than a 30-30. by the time the round came into production though, the patent for the 30-06 had expired and a royalty payment was no longer required, so the military never transitioned out of 30-06 until after ww2. after ww2, the hunt began again. technology had improved, and they were looking for a new cartridge that would be a nato cartridge. 30 caliber was very common at this point. with the 308 came the m14 rifle which saw service in Korea. by the time vietnam had come around, bean counters were getting concerned with the cost of rifles and ammo, so the ar15/m16 was adopted firing 556. that's a different story. sorry if I rambled

I don't think so. They are relatively cheap to buy, there isn't much of a collectors market for them. If Savage thought they woukd sell like hotcakes they woukd make them again. Personally I'd love one, and am in the market for one. A 99 in .300 savage with a fixed 4x scope will take any north American game, except for maybe bison or grizzlies. My grandfather, grandmother, and 2 uncles used the same one for pronghorn, mule deer, and elk. Personally I want one, and I want an AR10 chambered in 300 Savage.

I think .308 is overkill for all light lever actions, and has little to no terminal advantage on deer over the original .300 Savage cartridge. I reload my .300's with 165grn Boattails and 34grn 4064. Perfect, accurate, and lower recoil than seen here in this video. I can only surmise that the loadings are probably at least 180 grn bullets, or possibly 200 grain judging by the rifle flying around like that. Lots of factory loadings are 180grns these days, with 200's being common with older stuff - like he is using. Mine sits nice and flat with the lighter bullet. Also, factoryloads have more powder than I use. No shoulder issues and the deer don't seem to know the difference. Best lever action ever built, IMO. His is like mine, probably an EG, with the fine fore end and small schnabel (German for small knob) . It also has the counter port.

This is my first time seeing a gun that looks similar to a Winchester shotgun.

One look at that round and I immediately said, kid you not, "Oof, they're gonna feel that downrange."

I think this is the first lever action rifle ive ever seen that didnt try to look like something from the wild west, i love the modern shotgun-esque design of this thing!

My dad gave me my Savage 99 in 308 38 years ago. Still looks great and still not broken in. The coin fell out of the stock but I got another to replace it. I have always taken the best care of it. I inherited his 99 in 250 Savage which I took my very first deer with. He loved that one and had many sucessful hunts with it.

My dad used this in WWI. He was buried with the one he used because he said it was his best friend through everything. His guardian Angel.

I also have a 22 pump Savage that belonged to my great uncle, I love both of my Savage rifles. The 300 took quite a few deer back in the late 60s through the early 80s, I will always treasure it, but like I said, finding ammo is hard, and expensive.

My daddy bought his Savage Model 99 .308 when he was 15 in 1964 worked and bought it at the little dept store by Collins bait shop. He has taken many deer and still hunts with it. Beautiful gun .

Excelente! Uma relíquia! Eu deveriam ter nascido no Texas... Aqui, a política ideológica destrói a iberdade, a história, etc.

When I was a stupid kid, I thought this rifle was ugly. Now, it’s a beautiful, unique firearm that every collector should own! The .300 Savage cartridge ain’t no slouch either!

Loaned my Brother my 99A 243. He took his 1st deer with it. He passed away before I could get it back. Thanks for the memories.

Love this rifle! A friend loan his to me for a deer hunting trip. I like the action of the lever, seems very solid, and the internal 5 cartridge capacity. It had a folding rear sight and was very accurate though I never fired more than 150 yds. Good caliber for deer, one shot kills. The buck i shot was dead before he even knew it. I still remember him and that moment. Great post.

The first gun that I went hunting with was my grandfathers beloved Savage 99. At best it struggled to feed and the last round would never chamber, perhaps it was because I was using the ammo he had when he died 20 years ago.

Savage guns were very popular in Malaysia in the 50s through to the 70s, especially it's single barrel shotgun. Very tough and reliable guns with reasonable prices.
