An update on my Savage Axis Rifle in 223. An excellent starter rifle for new shooters and intro to center fire rifles. A great choice for plinking, target practice, and survival.

I just got the xp last week and I fire Tulammo 223 for $5.47 a pack of 20 rounds. It will hit 200 yards at just over and inch. I did fire a couple of 5.56 cartridges and had no problem. The tulammo specs are 3240 ft/sec and the 5.56 were about 3100 so chamber pressure was no issue. If it were a semi auto I probably would not have tried 5.56 but not being a semi auto It seemed to be no issue. Sighted in and tweaking the scope up and down slightly it will hit 3" sticky targets at 50, 75,100 and 200 yards. I spotted it used for 219 used at Cabellas so I am extatic at the accuracy for the price. Also the scope is perfectly clear when jacked to its maximum of 9x40. hitting a 6" steel plate at 200 yards with a 50/200 yard zero setting can be done at will without missing a shot. Great Review and I also love this gun. Thinking about getting a 308 if I can find a used one this spring of the same rifle.

+Buzby J I'm consistently impressed with the quality. . .especially considering the low price. I have also considered picking on up in 308 but have never gotten around to it for some reason. I'm also quite interested in the Ruger American Rifle but I'll probably stick with Savage as I already know what I'm getting for the price. Glad you enjoyed the vid! MDP

I know this is an old comment but did you ever have any hang ups with the tula? I shot one round of tula from my axis in .223 and the bolt got stuck and i had to let if cool for a while before i could open it.

I love mine in the Bush Camo. Stock, barrel and scope all in Camo. A very well coated job. Flawless. Amazing consistency sighted in a 200 yrds. I like the feel and action. .223 in 55gr. varmint rounds works awesome.

Great review. I have been debating what caliber to go with, and after seeing your video it makes sense to go with the 223 caliber, especially since I already have like 8 boxes of ammo for it...thanks again!

Starter rifle? My Axis .223 is a mil spec sniper rifle. Vortex Diamondback 4-12x40 AO scope. 4 mags, custom camo stock all the way. Hornady .223 Critical Defense ammo. Custom Accutrigger job. For a total of $600. I would put my Axis up against any 308 or 270 all day at 200 yards. Fantastic weapon for the price and an excellent choice for when the SHTF. I wouldn't take anything for my Axis.

I just traded my 15 year old Axis in 308 for a Parker Hale 1200 in 300 Win Mag. The old fellow I traded with stated he has never shot a rifle so accurate.

Like I said, I have a Savage Axis in 223. What I don't understand is they say the magazine holds 4 rounds when in actuality you can get 5 in it.
@MDPrepper6 жыл бұрын
Maybe certain states don't allow that many rounds in the mag when hunting?? That's the only reason I could think of.
@Me2Lancer5 жыл бұрын
I agree. This is one of the best bolt action options out there. I liked my Axis .223 so much I purchased on in .22-250. As for flat shooting it does a great job of extending the range of a .22 cal cartridge.
@aksuperhero11 жыл бұрын
I can tell you from person experience, that rifle rocks. I have one and its taken more game than any other in my safe. CZ 527 carbine is a higher end shooter.

out standing brother. The 223 cal is over looked a lot in hunting more than just varmint hunting. As you know are deer are small here so the 223 works so well for hunting here. God Bless brother.

Great review MDP. Couldn't see a scratch one. Good point of versatility with AR same round. Seems someday soon Ammo might be coming down in price...correction after BO leaves office. Thx for the vid MDP!

If you are looking for a budget long range you MUST consider the Swiss K-31 rifle. It shoots a .308 equalivent round and will shoot accurately to 1000 yards plus. They are becoming harder to find but the are top quality.I routinely use mine to make a point to my equipment snob friends that a rifle does not have to cost lots of money and often hits targets the others can not hit with their "modern" rifles.

I can hunt deer with .223 in my state and I only have 5 empty slots in my ammo box with 5 deer that is the best rifle I have ever shot
@MDPrepper7 жыл бұрын
It's a great low cost rifle and I certainly don't regret the purchase. I just picked up a Mossberg Patriot rifle in .308 and I'm highly impressed with it as well.

I guess if I looked a little harder...Mossberg has the MSRP for the MVP Patrol at $681 (w/o scope). The Flex rockets up to nearly a thousand. I'm gonna' blame this on my Hydrocodone. Lateral fracture of the distal radius. Flipped my patrol bike helping a deputy make an arrrest. So I'm not fully with it at the moment. But shy of $700 is still pretty pricey for what you're getting.

I hate how expensive the mags are, I have the exact rifle. Fun shooter, does not extract brown bear steel case

I have the same model in 22-250. A tack driver.
@loknlode11 жыл бұрын
Have you seen the Mossberg MVP Patrol? Pretty nice, but not sure what the msrp is. These are great rifles, especially for the price. I had a Stevens 200 (Savage 110) in 22-250 that was an ABSOLUTE tack driver! 200 yds shooting sub-moa all day, with a Tasco Target/Varmint scope. The whole package, including the scope/rings was $385. Thanks for the vids!!!

Save some extra cash for a scope as they usually don't come with them anymore (or at least I haven't seen one lately) $20 for low cost but $40+ is probably more realistic.

@MDPrepper10 жыл бұрын
The MVP looks like a nice rifle but I think it's a bit overpriced for what you get. It's in the same range as lower priced AR's. I'd rather have the AR in that price range

@loknlode11 жыл бұрын
Wow. That seems, I don't know, excessive? I can't see that kind of money for AR Mag capability. You could take one of these Axis', trim the barrel down, thread it, mount a muzzle brake and a scope and have darn near the same gun for about half. Crazy. I'm glad I'm cheap.

I just bought this. What's your opinion on the scope? My came with a bushnell AO Scope. I may replace the scope and rings. I paid $422 out the door. Mine is the xp version. It came with a camo stock.
@MDPrepper8 жыл бұрын
I don't think they're using the same optics as they did when I bought mine many years ago. It was adequate for shorter range shooting 100 to 200 yards no problems. Never really tested it at longer ranges but I'm not sure it would perform very well but I live in SC so not many shots beyond 100 yards around here.
@randyneal17908 жыл бұрын
MDPrepper what do you think about the stock?
@MDPrepper8 жыл бұрын
Randy Neal I'm not sure if they've made any changes to the stock since I purchased mine but It's held up just fine. No complaints from me.
@randyneal17908 жыл бұрын
MDPrepper OK thanks. I'll probably replace it with a boyds after market stock and Pillar and glass bed the action. Thanks for the info though.

hello, ive got a question to whom can answer it. I am commenting from URUGUAY, a small country beside argentina. Someone is offering me this same rifle...a savage axis 223 camuflaged. well the question is: is this rifle reliable, precise for scope hunting? what about compared to other brands, lets say like RUGER? i thank anyonw who could respond this for me... cheers!
@MDPrepper10 жыл бұрын
Peter Apolant It'll be difficult to find a similar rifle in this price range that works as well as the Axis. The Ruger American rifle is nice for the price but I doubt they'd sell those in Uruguay. The trigger isn't the best but it's good enough for most jobs (wouldn't want to try to hit something at 400 yards/meters with it but for shorter range work it'll do the job) The Remington 770 has come a long way but I remember the crappy old triggers so I avoid them. Mossberg makes some decent low cost bolt rifles as well. Good luck!
@jhippl11 жыл бұрын
to bad they dont make one in 7.62x39 so one could hunt deer with it and still be an intermediate rifle round for lower recoil than a a standard rifle round

Baconator Green if you want a bolt action in 5.56, mossberg mvp is your rifle. It even has compatability with standard ar mags, if for some reason a 30-roound magazine in your bolt action appeals to you.

Hey man, I'm having a problem with my axis. The bolt is sticky hard to open the bolt. Haven't have a chance to take it to the shooting guard range yet. But just wondering if your axis is the same with mine.
@MDPrepper10 жыл бұрын
Mr1000fucks Can't say I've ever had that problem. . .but I might know what the problem is. Have you (or anyone else) been firing any steel cased Russian ammo? Wolf or Tula etc? Sometimes the lacquered cases can get too hot and the lacquer can slightly melt onto the bolt and receiver and then cool/harden and lead to a sticky bolt. Never had it with my Axis but I've seen it with older bolt rifles
