I am alone at work and it's nine o clock, here in Greece.. I am listening to this song again.. this will be the song that my granddaughter will hear and sing.. keep your heads up,you women everywhere, keep your voices loud, and even louder..never give up,never stay down..get up and raise for once more..you know what to do.. it's in every woman's blood.. through our veins.. Cry from happiness, smile from pain, courage when there's nothing to hope..this is how it feels being a woman.. My sisters everywhere in the world, smile.. There is always at least one reason.. Greetings from my beloved country, Greece..to everyone.. especially to you , Scottish and Irish people..

My grandmother who was originally from Scandinavia and was like 89 when I was born used to sing a lullyby to me I never really knew what the words meant but never forgot the melody. The first night I heard this song I could not get the picture of my grandma rocking me as well as even at 99 showing me how to tell the difference between things like good wild mushrooms and poison ones. It is good to know I am even her savage grand daughter

I am my mother's savage daughter the one who runs barefoot, cursing sharp stones. I am my mother's savage daughter. I will not cut my hair. I will not lower my voice. My mother's child is a savage. She looks for her omens in the colors of stones, In the faces of cats and the fall of feathers, In the dancing of fire and the curve of old bones. Chorus My mother's child dances in darkness , she sings heathen songs by the light of the moon And watches the stars and renames the planets and dreams she can reach them with a song and a broom. Chorus We all are brought forth out of darkness, into this world through blood and through pain. And deep in our bones, the Old songs are waking So sing them with voices of thunder and rain! We are our mother's savage daughter-- the ones who run barefoot, cursing sharp stones. We are our mother's savage daughters. We will not cut our hair. We will not lower our voice. (x3)
