I saw Savage Grace at Olympia Stadium, Detroit, MI, on July 26, 1969. They kicked major ass. Also on the bill was The James Gang, The Box Tops, and the headliner, CCR. What a night! I'll never forget! Good to hear their music again after so many years.

There were so many great "local" artists touring in Michigan in the late 60's and early 70's but I never understood how this album never became what it was - one of the best of the era. It should have been platinum

I was in a band back at the time that Savage Grace made their first album and Ron Koss was our drummer's cousin. (east side of Detroit) Koss and my old friend are both long gone now. RIP.

I can still remember when I first saw this album and bought it having previously heard nothing from it. But the cover and album back were intriguing and so I bought it. I was the only person in southern California that I ever knew who had it. I never again saw it in anyone's house but when I put it on for my friends, they were always impressed with songs like "Lady Rain" and "All Along the Watchtower." Sadly, they didn't buy it and that was likely the story and the problem across the country. The band deserved better and one could rightfully point to Savage Grace as the 1970 precursor to later prog metal groups like Dream Theater, and a band who stood in their own time alongside groups like Quatermass, early Renaissance, and even Little Feat (see "Come On Down" for details). A great band trying out new territory that few were even considering in 1970.

The blonde guy in Savage Grace (Koss?) dated a gorgeous chick who lived across the street from me in Detroit during the late 60s and early 70s. Didn't get to know him or her that well, but I and a few other teenaged guys from our hood hung out with her younger sister back then. Both of them were stone foxes, and "Debbie" and her sister had moved to SoCal (of course) by the 80s. She returned to Detroit once when her father passed, and the house that they lived in is long gone (Mine is still there as of this date per Google maps)

This band was ahead of it's time and deserved much more recognition. A drummer from Royal Oak who I played with named Bill ( last name?) joined the band when they reunited in late 1980s and before 1992. For some reason, the original drummer could not do the shows. They played downtown Detroit for a while. Does anybody remember this and know Bill's full name?
@jamesuebbing10419 ай бұрын
Bill Gordon, original drummer was Larry Zack

Bill Gordon...yes, thank you! I first met Ron Koss in about 1969 and then again in Bill's basement in Royal Oak. I think he said he was selling cars(?) ... I was shocked and it changed my mind about the music business. If you know Bill, tell him hello from Joe where we played sessions in St Clair Shores.

Found their other record at a garage sale this morning, never heard of them, but looked interesting. It’s Neanderthal, quaalude thunder music. The song “Macon Georgia” is a re-write of The Band’s “The Weight”

The Metal Band from the 80's known as Tight, used our Name Savage Grace without permission and moved to LA to do those Metal Albums. Just BS. Dave Paget....was their manager. Jeff Jones
@TheKetzer6668 жыл бұрын
+Jeffrey M Jones Tbh "your" band was dead and gone for over ten years when the "BS"-Band came up with the name "Savage Grace". and they were known as "Marquee de Sade" btw. Also seing you guys not even getting the number of views here for an album that the BS-guys get for one song is making me laugh. "Your" Savage Grace was known as: "Savage Grace was Detroit, Michigan's progressive rock band of the late 1960s...." WOW of the late 60`s and "you", because you did not even play a role or a note back then, teamed up in `68?! LÖL Who wrote that wiki.BS article or that opener? You? "Your" Savage Grace must`ve been a huge factor in US-American-Pseudo-Rock-Genre...or no? wiki article says no...the albums are "red".... ;-) Just because "your" band opened for Hendrix means what? Exactly: Nothing. How many times bands opened for someone just because it was the cheapest solution or someone knew someone who got laid by someone and someone owed someone a favor or whatever. Anyway why the original Savage Grace never sued the BS-band? Lack of $$$ i`d say, right? Shitty management? And label too? LÖL You might be right about the steal of the name, but i have not heard about it before. Got any proofs? . Oh and don`t believe only "Metal" bands "steal" names....ever heard of "Incubus"....and that band was active....not buried. Cheers.
@StormRaven9998 жыл бұрын
+TheKetzer666 so your point is someone can steal a bands name just bc they havent played in awhile? so I can go out as the doors? or jimi hendrix? you're a fucking loser. i love metal but the REAL Savage Grace is this band.
@TheKetzer6668 жыл бұрын
MadameAk47 who cares about a band that has been away for years anyway? It is not about stealing a name in general. It is about active and not active bands. Surely you could name your band "The Doors", but look how it smells. An perrfect example for a real steal is "Incubus". An absloute active band, releases incl., "lost" it`s name. Totally agree that this is a no-go. And btw idk if you "love metal" or not, not part of the topic as this goes to all genres as you are aware i bet.
@denlig26716 жыл бұрын
+TheKetzer666 Apparently, your metalheads are specialized in group name theft! because they also stole their old name from the French group "Marquis de Sade" which was created in 1977...
