Dan Cates also known as Jungleman has proven himself as one of the most formidable online poker players in the world. However, he is known to grace the live tables and in this hand he found himself in the cash game streets on the Lodge Card Club stream in Texas. He is battling against stream regular and action player Taras. Jungleman finds himself in a bit of a predicament after he value bets an overpair on the river only for Taras to turn over his cards and show the winning hand whilst he contemplates his decision. Will Cates be able to talk him into folding the winning hand?
On the turn, when the board is extremely connected and wet, you should look to use large bet sizes such as a pot sized bet or an overbet. A lot of rivers will change the board texture which may not allow you to bet again with hands that were previously strong value hands. Charge your opponents more for them to draw to their straight or flush.
Dan Cates also known as Jungleman and w00ki3z is a 33 year old from the USA and is regarded by many as one of the best poker players in the world both online and live. He has played in all the high stakes poker cash games around the world for many years. He has over $12,000,000 in live tournament earnings, putting him in the top 80 on the all time money list. He famously won the World Series Of Poker (WSOP) $50,000 Players Championships (regarded as one of the hardest poker tournaments to win) in 2021 and again in 2022. Since 2012, Cates has played in over 68 live cash game streams and is down over $1,450,000.
Taras is an amateur poker player living in Texas. He has been a regular at The Lodge for a long time and will play stakes from $5/$10 up to $400/$800. He is known to be very talkative at the table. Since 2022, Taras has played in over 20 live cash game streams and is up over $800,000.
In early 2022, poker professionals Doug Polk, Brad Owen, and Andrew Neeme joined forces to acquire a controlling stake in The Lodge Poker Club & Card Room, which happens to be the largest poker establishment in Austin, Texas. This exclusive poker club, accessible only to its members, boasts an impressive array of amenities, including over 80 poker tables of cash games and tournaments, operating around-the-clock. Additionally, The Lodge provides an inviting ambiance with 40 large-screen TVs, allowing poker club members to enjoy sports entertainment while playing poker or while relaxing in the cozy waiting area. The live poker stream includes commentary from Skull Mike and Slick Rick, who have been long-time regulars at The Lodge. They provide viewers with strategic insights, complemented by a perfect blend of humor.
The Lodge Live Stream has had a variety of different poker players coming to play on stream, these include; Doug Polk ‘WCGRider’, Alex Foxen, Dan Cates ‘Jungleman’, Ben Lamb, Bill Perkins, Brad Owen, Andrew Neeme, and Nik Airball.
🔍 Preflop:
With the $200 straddle on, Viper limps in with AKo from under the gun +2. Dan Cates raises to $1,000 from the button with pocket jacks. After the small blind folds, Taras decides to 3-bet to $3,400 with 94 of diamonds. Viper calls with his big slick, and Jungleman calls with the jiggities.
💸 Flop - Th 9h 9c:
Taras out flops his opponents with trip nines. He fires a continuation bet of $4,500. Viper folds ace king, but Jungleman sticks around with his overpair and they go to the turn heads up.
💣 Turn - 6c:
The 6 of clubs on the turn introduces a second flush draw and brings in a possible straight. Taras fires a second barrel of $15,000. Jungleman calls again and they head to the river.
🌊 River - 5c:
The backdoor flush comes in on the 5 of clubs river. Taras slows down and checks with his trip nines. Jungleman attempts to extract some value with his overpair to the board. He bets $21,500 for just under half-pot. Taras doesn’t call straight away; instead, he turns his cards over to try and get a read from the online poker legend. Jungleman then starts to talk to Taras in an attempt to get him to lay down the best hand. But will it work? Stay tuned to the end of this video to find out.

I think Jungleman was actually shocked to see him consider folding a 9 there. I think calling this a slowroll is inaccurate, more of a nitroll since he turned hand up pretty quickly and was just deliberating on what most of us would consider a trivial call.

Taking a few moments to think through the call is fine. Turning up your hand and asking everyone for help is just lunacy, unless you're trying to develop an image as a weak tight donor. But that's really not a bad image to develop if you're willing to make thin calls once everyone starts bluffing widely at you.

The guy was not slow rolling. That said he was definitely leaning towards the call the whole time and was simply looking for a reason to not (which is his right if he wants). Besides slow rolling is when you pretty much have the nuts. As he pointed out there were many hands that could beat him. Cowboy being all pissy about it is even more annoying if you ask me. He got a little greedy and got called. He’s only got himself to blame. Grow up.

I think he's surprised that Taras is taking so long because back then Taras was a HUGE fish and wouldn't have hesitated to call. Jungle's opening range should not have too many 9's, and with only one broadway card out there (T) this should have been almost a snap call from Taras using GTO. Unless Jungle called the flop with JQ or QK of clubs (backdooor flush + straight draw) then he doesn't get there.

jungle's comment to me says "weak". My biggest problem was the fact he spent so much time engaging on a conversation with Polk. That's when I realize his mistake, he should've keep talking like anything happened after seeing those cards. That would've made the 3 of a kind to fold
@Zarl451
@Zarl451 4 күн бұрын
The change in demeanour is interesting, I interpreted that as he's had a low decision hand through, and now on the river he's trying to find a line in a tricky spot. So, either something like top pair (or an over pair), or a draw that's missed. If the river is suddenly hard then something has changed. With the 9s the only thing I'd be worried about is the backdoor flush, and if you've paid off 2 good sized bets and runner runned a flush on me, fine, I'll just have to pay it off.
@heinrichh.6369
@heinrichh.6369 21 күн бұрын
you said you would not raise because you are afraid ofgetting stacked against a better Hand. however given the stack sizes even a passiv approavh leads to getting stacked so that argument goes out the window. the best reason to play passive is to keep his bluffs in, which is a far better argument especially against his opponent.

I wouldn’t call it a slow roll, nor would I call it a nit roll. It was a legit tough decision on the river given the runout and jungle’s line and subsequent range as played. Jungle opens pre on the button then flats Taras’ 3 bet from the BB. It narrows jungles range to bigger pocket pairs, suited broadway combos, and really playable postflop drawing hands when IP like 78 suited, 89 suited and 10/9 suited. This means there are actually a decent number of combos in jungle’s range that will have Taras’ trip 9s coolered on that runout: pocket 10s, 10/9 suited, 78 suited, possibly better 9x with the kicker playing, and backdoor flushes with suited broadway cards. There’s actually not that many combos jungle would choose to bluff with on that runout given how strong of a line Taras had taken, as Taras’ range was going to be weighted towards overpairs, which made jungle’s value bet that much more scary looking. Jungle is a good enough player that you can make the legit argument that he may have actually been turning his jacks into a bluff, as there’s just not many combos at all worse than that which would’ve chosen to pay it off on the end. That said, if it were a bluff, it was very bad sizing on the river, as bigger overpairs than jacks would’ve had a tough time folding for the pot odds on the end given jungle’s river size, and unless Taras was just screwing around pre with some random 9x combo and got a miracle flop, his range, given the line he took this hand, was going to contain mostly bigger pairs than jacks which were going to have a tough time folding on the end to jungle’s river sizing. Jungle also had the Jh blocker which made his hand a very bad bluff candidate, as he blocked Taras’ strongest and subsequently most likely possible busted front door draw combos. This leads me to believe it was more than likely jungle value owning himself with a mistake on the river.

The speech play reminds me a bit from a big hand I played live one day... so I sat down at a live game (lower stakes) and the table is fairly loose preflop and fairly tight post as per the usual in these types of games. I'm 2-3 seats from the button and have A7 of hearts. I forget action before but lots of players are in the pot already and then the small blind makes 3bet PFR... ok... everyone calls. Flop is 458 with one heart. Small blind tanks a bit then rips for 25bb, slightly less than pot size. Action folds to me and I notice the only guy to my left is almost ready to genuinely fold... hmmm... so I think about the hand some. I only have somewhere around maybe 75bb and just calling here is terrible. The dude obviously has the overpair, but, he seems concerned... worried... against KK I have 7 clean outs and a backdoor flush. Not good enough for draw equity alone, but, do I have fold equity? Do I have fold equity? The guy making this play doesn't know me as a semi-regular down there... and most players tend to adapt real passively to my game because I have HUGE semi bluff rep and my entire game is refined to put other players in horrible spots. He doesn't know me though and I had been uncharacteristically tight this session... ok, here we go. Jam all in. The guy tanks longer than ANYONE has ever tanked against me in nearly 20 years of live poker at the time. Literally the longest tank I've put someone in. During this tank the guy thinks he can speech play read. Tee hee, ok bud. He starts pissing and moaning about 67, "he's got 67, blah blah blah" and trying to stare me down. You people gotta realize I don't get nervous over money and he's flipping his KK face up and everything trying to make a read. I'm talking to him, smiling, chuckling as he laments his misfortune. Eventually, he starts talking himself into a fold, so I give him that Jungle line, "You're not going to fold Kings!" while still maintaining that disposition. He takes another half minute and mucks. After folding he says, "The only reason I folded is because you didn't call the clock! [I knew you had it!]" To that I respond with, "I had A7 of hearts" and he responds in complete disbelief. He starts saying that "there's no way I would do that, there's no way I would make that play with a worse hand, blah blah blah." I just turn to the guy to my left, who has a better idea of my playstyle and ask him if he believes me. His eyes immediately go real wide and he nods enthusiastically. But even if he called you know I'm spiking the draw... :)~
