Honestly, that setup at 5:37 requires a lot of courage from the punter to sell it. Basically has to leave himself completely prone because if the other team figures out he still has the ball, he's getting completely obliterated. Probably not easy to keep your composure as you have two NFLers sprinting directly at you with intent to destroy you, lol

Yeah, until the big kid carrying the ball got tired of a bunch of other kids hacking at his arms trying to get the ball because there was no "safety" (no end zone, no base, no goal...and no point except for the mob fucking with the dude with the ball). I remember the game ended this as an option at my school: one kid, trying out a new "strategy", found that he could defend the ball better by just standing in place. Another kid (having a bad day?) got irritated that the kid with the ball wasn't running, and punched the kid with the ball in the arm. The kid with the "active hands" then got his nose broken...and I didn't even get expelled. Good times.

Danny White did so many fake punts, you never knew if he was going to take off. But he'd just wait and hesitate a second to see where the defenders were going. One of the few things Tom Landry allowed in regards to freelancing. White had a green light to take off whenever he felt he could make at least a first down. Sadly, as a QB, he got so close to the Super Bowl, playing in 3 consecutive NFC Championship games after Staubach retired. His problem was, he didn't have a big arm like Roger, but he still performed at a very high level due to his intelligence and tutelage under Staubach. "The Catch" was his heartbreaking loss as Dallas should have won that game. Of course, Joe Montana was a magician. Can't take anything away from him.

On a lot of these the punt return specialist has to be the one to make the tackle, and most of the time those guys are the smaller WR and RBs who haven't made a tackle since high school. It's an even greater mismatch because the player getting the quick snap is usually a big fullback or tight end. I imagine those punt return guys aren't too happy to take that collision.

Way back in 1982, the Cowboys were playing the Redskins in Washington. The Cowboys were faced with a 4th down at about their own 15 yard line when Danny White, after taking the snap, immediately noticed the Redskins didn't rush anyone and took off with the ball. I think White had run about 10-15 yards past the line of scrimmage when the Redskins finally realized what was going on. Even though it might not have qualified as a fake punt, it sure looked as if it was. White didn't score, but nonetheless, it was definitely football folly material. The Cowboys won 24-10 but the Redskins won what was obviously the far more critical game when they beat Dallas in the NFC championship 31-17 then beat Miami in Super Bowl XVII 27-17. Ah what the hell. It was fun while it lasted.
