Beautiful pattern, awesome band, sexy song. Well done Matt! The first one you showed won the "blue ribbon" :o) Good pattern for low light / dark or deep water. Classic Winters Hope hackle colors, Spade style construction like Alec Jackson's patterns - less is more theme. Did the book give a time line on the pattern? Many of the "intruder style" patterns are tied like soft hackles, the hackles propped up with a "thorax", imho. Thanks Matt, awesome video. If you bag a "Tom" use the gorgeous body feathers to hackle a fly like this. Last month one walked next to my house, and I've heard gobbles the past week or so :o) You may have to use 2 or 3 feathers, you only get a couple of wraps per feather - that was the case with the feathers I had. Winter won't leave! White Easter morning, Nor' Easter today with 1" to 10" of heavy wet snow. Hope all is well with you! 🤓👍
@SavageFlies2 жыл бұрын
Thanks Joe! No real history on the pattern, which is a shame because it's bound to have some kind of story behind it. I mean, was Moody Blue a common term before the band? Or was this fly most likely named after the band was famous? Now I'm going to have to research Alec Jackson's patterns. And oh, speaking of turkey hunting... nothing yet. It snowed here on Monday, yesterday was cold and drizzly so I went shopping in town with the wife. But I have been out hunting all morning. I've seen plenty but haven't been able to call any in close enough yet. Oh well. I've got a couple more days of trying. :-)

Thanks Layton. I've seen a lot of orange/yellow steelhead patterns of this style too. If I recall the blues/purples are for summer or fall runs, and the orange/yellows are for winter steelhead? I'm not sure if that's right, or what the difference really is. I just need to get up your way to give it a try. :-)

A few years ago when living in Oregon USA, looking into winter steelhead flies to learn how to make I came across flies like this in colors like Purple & Pink, Black & Purple , Black & Pink,, Chatruese & black, bright blue and black and the list goes on & on. I really like the sparsness and delicate look about these flies. I used them at the bottom of the Columbia River for Coho and they worked a treat.. If I remember rightly sometimes I only used 1 Hackle feather and then 2 colors of Ostrich combined in a dubbing loop. The ostrich flows great in the water I think, & the hackle was just to hold it up. Thank you for tying this fly, Brings back fun memories..
