Thank you Lora! Some of the things I'm thinking... a store, start doing Instagram (maybe), a newsletter, another tying contest in the spring, and one I'm really looking forward to... a name-the-fly contest for every major holiday! Stand by for January 1st and the New Year's fly on Saturday. :-)

Happy New Year Matt! This looks like a great fly and I can’t wait to try it out for small panfish here in KY. I’m excited to see the store and what you will have to offer there. I have a tip for you and others, I’ve recently started picking up silicone skirts for bass lures to use as rubber legs when fly tying. They are usually a little better priced and you get a variety of colors with each bundle.
@SavageFlies3 жыл бұрын
Great tip Eli. I just checked Bass Pro online and it looks like you can get a three pack of rubber skirts for about $3. That is a pretty good deal and could make a lot of hopper legs! And yep, panfish would love a little bug like this. But then again, the bluegill around here will eat anything they can get in their mouth. :-)
@markfritch31683 жыл бұрын
Hi Eli, (Mark from Idaho). I’ve been toying with the idea of wrapping rubber legs over thread for a pupa pattern. Those patterns are quite effective in the winter midday if they are small. Your thoughts…

Nifty pattern. Yellow sallies work pretty well in both Maine & Massachusetts. I’ll bet you could also use it for a caddis, just color the wing with a brown magic marker. Glad I kept the extra yellow foam pieces when I made a bunch of Gartside’s Gurglers in August.

Size 18 makes me wonder if this is what they use for little green stones. I know a mountain brookie stream that held a ton of them. Lot of fun...if you didn't mind keeping an eye out for rattlesnakes!
@SavageFlies3 жыл бұрын
Yikes! I've only seen one rattlesnake while fishing here in Maryland in the last decade. It was a big one though... slithering right across the trail about ten feet in front of me. I gave him plenty of room. :-) Now the recipe on this one did say yellow or chartreuse so I'll bet you're right in that it could imitate one of the little green stoneflies.

Thanks Sally! Hmmmm... root beer color. It looks like what Stockard carries (by Hedron) has a couple colors that are close. They have a bronze and one called Perch that might work for you. If you like the holographic stuff, they have one called Copper that might also be close. I'd check this one first: www.jsflyfishing.com/hedron-flashabou

Looks like a fun one to tie for sure. I was wondering if trimming the bottom of that hackle would keep the hook point more open for that size. Will definitely be playing around with that pattern. Also looking forward to the opening of your new store. Happy holidays and continued blessings my friend.
@SavageFlies3 жыл бұрын
You know Mark, that very well could help. What I find myself doing when I'm on the river is... if I'm getting strikes but not setting the hook, I'll check my hook gap and see if I've got too much junk closing it up. And if so, I'll do exactly as you mention, and snip some of the bottom hackle off. Or just change flies. :-)
@Jd-yc3gw3 жыл бұрын
Good morning Matt. Having my morning ☕️ watching you tie a fly. Enjoyed watching you tie on the tiniest hook I’ve seen tied. The comparison to the dime showed the size comparison and I’ve heard others talk about tying sizes in the 20’s. Wow, that’s small. My old eyes hurt when you were done. If I tied anything that small I would need to invest in some glasses specifically for tying. You must have been burning the midnight oil to get everything done last night. I sure appreciate the effort you put in to keep the videos coming along with the other aspects of operating your channel besides the farm, your work and your family. The cold snap has not gone away yet. -35F as I type but I’d rather go out in that than go for a root canal like Jim. Take care Matt and Happy New Year to you and your family.
@SavageFlies3 жыл бұрын
I appreciate that John. I've been off work this week so I've had the luxury of goofing around with the channel and working on the store/website. And you're right... 18s and smaller can definitely be a challenge! Take a look at this video I did of a #20 Elk Hair Caddis. It's got some tips for tying this small. :-) kzbin.info/www/bejne/fGK3aneEZpeCfNk

That is a really cool looking little fly. And I do mean little. What would keep a person from sizing this up a few hook sizes? Then slinging it at those hungry Smallmouth? Great job, great video. Sure appreciate all you do buddy. But don’t wear yourself out. Thank you Sir.
@SavageFlies3 жыл бұрын
You bet Jeff and I appreciate YOU my friend. :-) There's nothing that says you couldn't tie this bigger and toss it toward some smallmouth or hungry panfish. Much bigger though and I'd just call it a general attractor pattern. Something that doesn't really look like anything but something buggy to eat!

Hi Matt! Nice fly, it is similar to a fly we use in Sweden called “Suparpuppan” (not Superpuppan which Is a completely different pattern). Suparpuppan has a similar body made of yellow foam, a thorax made of hare dubbing and then a sparse partridge hackle. Great fly for Grayling👍. Happy New Year from Sweden!

Well thank you Bengt-Olov! I just looked up a Suparpuppan and you're right, they are very similar! I watched a couple tiers tie one of these and it looks like something I should do around here. Thank you for the note! And happy new year my friend. :-)

Hi Matt!! So excited for you’re online store! I do a lot of online shopping from KZbin fly tier’s. Do you think I could use white dog hair?
@SavageFlies3 жыл бұрын
Thanks Barbara! White dog hair... hmmm... maybe you could! But there are so many different kinds of dogs and dog hair, you might just have to give it a try. I'm sure you could use it for some kind of fly. :-) Keep in mind that the most beneficial trait of snowshoe hare feet hair is that it's really hollow and buoyant. And super compact on the pad of the foot. And as it is so compact, you can make a lot of flies out of one foot.

Little Yellow Stone??
@SavageFlies3 жыл бұрын
That was my best guess Bob. But most of the little stoneflies around here don't have big bodies so it did make me wonder if the foam on this acts as a wing imitation as well. I don't know for sure... all I know is that it was yellow and in the stonefly section of the pattern encyclopedia. :-)
