My first thought was GRAY? Maybe the wing was originally horse hair, named after the doner..... Defiantly and interesting combo of colors, although I have watched fish take green moss/plant material off the surface to eat. Both panfish and carp, I did catch the brim on a small fly embedded in the plant material, slightly subsurface/emerger below the surface film. Thanks for sharing the video Matt. Well tied my friend.

I've not heard of this fly before so learning the story behind it is interesting. Deer hair wing is a surprise so I'll have to tie one and see how it works. My favorite searching fly is a Crackleback which is a dry until it goes under on the swing. Thanks.

It will work, but I still can’t figure out the name even though I looked up the lyrics & song history.. You can make the tying in the end of frayed floss a little easier by putting a little wax on your fingers & rubbing the floss tips or by slightly wetting them. It holds them together.

The Old Gray Mare, "she ain't what she used to be". Remember that old little ditty? Maybe that song has something to do with the patterns name, check out wikipedia. Either way it's a nice pattern, with or without that front hackle. My favorite "dry/wet" fly is a Usual. Another great video Matt, welcome back :o) 🪰👍
