Regarding your comments about the interior: I’m driving a 992 and I do miss the old, “cluttered” interior a lot. I agree. Although I am not fortunate to own a Porsche, when I compare my new Audi to the 2017 q7, I miss the knobs and direct push controls that get you to exactly where you want to be. The new screen makes me take unnecessary jump through extra hoops steps.
@rebc1233 жыл бұрын
I think that, other than price, is one of the reasons I went to a used 991.2 instead of a 992. The 991.2 has the nice balance on the interior between the more traditional layout with good useful tech. Also, the 992 wasn't available in a manual when I found my 991.2. I agree with you on the interior though. The Boxster/Cayman models have retained the more traditional layout with discrete buttons for discrete functions, something the 991.2 tends to keep as well.

Now that they are here, is it a surprise the prices also approach 911 levels? If you don't want to spend ~100k, buy a base Cayman, it is a wonderful car. Still too high? The return of the flat 6 engines is bound to depress prices of 2014-2016 981 series cars, and a 3.4 liter Cayman S is a 99% ideal sports car.

Nice review. I agree with everything you said except the complaints about the gearing, which is perfect the way it is for the roads I drive every day. Very drivable around town without the need to rev it to 8k every start (I have the GT4) but also a joy to run through the gears to a high speed when appropriate. The longer gears also minimize the frequency of shifting to get to a high speed, which makes for a smoother, quicker run to a high speed. The gearing is also great for the track and through twistie canyon roads. My advice, if you're not going to drive this car fast in a way that makes the gearing a joy to behold, buy something else. I look forward to your GT4 and GT3 reviews. Thanks for your great work!

I do it all the time in my turbo Bimmer. Sure, the car will be a little sluggish because it lacks flat torque curve of a turbo, but to rectify this you can downshift in a lightning-quick fashion, courtesy of automatic rev-matching. In fact I believe that auto rev-matching is more useful in this car than in turbo ones, because it complements its high-revying, linear-torque, engine better.

The Boxter S was hands down the best performer of any. Handling, control, acceleration with foot down to the floor, comfort, and convertible to boot. I’ve never had the pleasure and now see the light. If I had the $$ I’d buy one. My son got a 2020 Hyundai Veloster N. He wanted a hot hatch. I’ve driven it to extremes over the same roads, and it has incredible handling and punch for a fwd 275hp turbo. More fun than anything, except the Vette and the Boxter. I'll wait a couple of years to get one myself, but this will go down as one of the great Porsche cars of the modern era. What's not to like?

“It’s quiet as a soft top” Eh! No way, I own a Boxster GTS and when driving on the motorway with the roof up it easily can get as loud as 92db, it’s not a quiet car at all, but then I didn’t buy it to be a limousine! Great car by the way and a great review of the GTS!

You both seemed to love this Boxster GTS 4.0 and the G80 M3 xdrive Comp. Of the two - which is the better drivers car?
@jhrodriguez083 жыл бұрын
116 thousand, makes me love my 981 GT4 even more 😁 . Those particle filters sound awful, and btw the engine is not far superior than the 3.8, the GT4 clubsport still uses the 3.8 from 981 generation because it demonstrated reliability over lot of track miles.

Driving a 981 Spyder myself I would also not change it for a 718. The 981 just sounds so much better then the 718 4.0.

Another great review by true car people. Your observation regarding the gearing is true. However, having owned a 718 Spyder for a year & a half, I realize that in reality, I don’t really need to wring out the engine to the max RPM in order to enjoy the car. Unless the car is tracked (which I don’t do anymore), it is most enjoyable btwn 4K & 6K RPM and at that range, the gearing issue really doesn’t come into play. In any case, I’ve had the luck to drive a number of Porsche sports cars and I always sheepishly admit that I enjoy the mid-engined Boxters more than the 911s, incl. the GT3 versions. Thank you for the great car videos.

The smile on his face when he started driving was like a kid realizing he actually LOVED the cereal he spent a lifetime telling his mom not to buy. LOL Personally, "medicine for the soul" is a good title. Porsche has done something magical balancing daily drivability with awesome performance. 0-60 and quarter mile numbers can only tell you so much. IF you're going to get a performance car as a daily driver and don't want to sacrifice much (and can afford the astronomical price tag), Porsches are a wonderful fit. Hint: save the cash and look for a lightly used certified one.

I think the PDK will be more fun on the road, due to the manual gearing being so bad. 2nd 80mph :(
@olasek79723 жыл бұрын
Manual gearing is perfect in this car. The distance between gears is just fine. You still are doing about 80 mph and 3000 rpm in 6-th gear which is similar to other sports cars.

Perhaps the most beautiful contemporary car I've ever seen. The body lines remind me of an MR-S. When mine goes out to pasture, I'd love to acquire one of these. Unlike SG, I want Porsche to maintain the physical controls, but then I want them to ditch the digital speedometer meter beneath the analog gauge.

Superb review ... And now I can't wait to bring my 10 year old 987.2 Cayman out for a drive mid-week, ahhh the joys of a NA Boxer-6 even if it only displaces 2.9 litres! Love this video... The 4 litre and balance of this Boxster is spectacular, your smile says it all 🙏🏻🤣😉

Why would you go for the 911? Is it just the prestige? Cayman/Boxsters go more than fast enough to satisfy almost everyone's needs.

@@JohnFromAccounting I'd get the 911 carrera for 100k if it had the same engine.
@doggedlydetermined70223 жыл бұрын
@@JohnFromAccounting because the 911 is the Porsche to have. A 992 carrera would be my choice every day of the week over this. The 911 has so much presence, it’s basically the ultimate sports car on the road. The 718 is just weak in comparison, just my thoughts.

Doggedly Determined Drive both and you will get the 718 because of that engine. The 911 is just the prestige and doesn‘t Sound as Good.

Mark and Jack-Great review. I understand the appeal of a manual transmission. Because this manual has such tall gearing, would you recommend getting the PDK? Using the paddles is almost as much fun as shifting a manual.

@lizhu85483 жыл бұрын
tbh I think Porsche should scrap 718 line completely. Here in Canada, a slightly spec'd gts would go around $110k, there are quite a few other sports cars at that price but with much better performance. Honestly people who could afford $100k++ cars would add a bit more for the more luxury 911 models than 718. At that price level, you would get a fairly recent 2nd hand 991 gt3.

A 4cyl Boxster/Cayman wasn’t this issue….the issue was was paying 6cyl money for a 4cyl. There’s a threshold consumers are unwilling to cross, which is what happened to the Audi TTRS…the current 4cyl 718 Boxster and Cayman are at least $10k overpriced.
