Strong points about the pricing structure - this just feels more like an extra trim package with some stuff that tries to help things... But it's still at the end of the day a Toyota Corolla. If you're spending this kind of money on a compact car you more than likely want something more fun than this like the Honda/Hyundai/VW fun car variants. Or something that feels more luxurious, like a Mazda 3.

With the new Mazda 3 turbo and AWD hatch for only a little more, it’s hard to see what toyota is even trying sell. If you want something with more room for modification, get an SI or Veloster. It just doesn’t make sense and Toyota is falling behind.

@@RCXDerp I'd be worried about the N as well, but at least it has options for enthusiasts. Compared to the gen4 mazda 3, which wasn't built with that in mind at all really, haha. However, I see the market Mazda is trying to carve with the new gen4/ gen4 turbo/ awd, and it's sort of the market I'm in at my current stage of life. I see where Honda is keeping its place for enthusiasts even though they really need to update their offerings and current reliability. I have absolutely no idea what Toyota is trying to achieve right now. They update exteriors to look radical, but continue to make really poor interior choices in material and outdated design. They add power, but continue to make their cars couches on wheels that feel unbalanced outside driving the highway. I don't think they have a clear trajectory other than making their cars appear "sportier and more attractive."

I can see a very small number of people for whom this makes sense, but it really is overpriced. Lowered springs, summer tires, and stiffening up a few other minor bits shouldn't coat $3000+. If they were only expecting to sell a few hundred amortizing the development costs would push the price up tgat much, but this isn't going to.be a rarity and will likely be made for several years. I kind of wonder if they've just decided to spread out the improvements over several years, as they've done with the 86's incremental improvements. Although I respect the reviewers' opinion, I feel that this car has not really been properly appreciated. The review car is the XSE Apex at $28,710, which gets close to Civic Si/Veloster N pricing. However, the SE Apex is $25,570, and gives up only some fit and finish -- basically, it has cloth seats. For a lot of people, $33K for a WRX is too much of a stretch compared to $26K. The regular SE is $22,875, so it is about a $2700 upgrade for the Apex package which includes quite a lot of good stuff including flow-formed wheels, better tires and suspension/exhaust upgrades. I think there is a place for a "four door Miata," or a mid-$20K, naturally aspirated 4cyl making about 160hp, that fits the "drive a slow car fast" sports car archetype -- a car you can wring out at every red light and stop sign, and does braking and cornering as well as any other sports car. A car that makes regular sub-65mph driving on public roads a lot more fun. Whether the Apex hits this mark I don't know, but they are trying. One advantage of this framework is: a simple naturally aspirated drivetrain that offers both high gas mileage and low maintenance hassles; and, probably, lower insurance costs. Edmunds' five-year cost-to-own calculator shows the Corolla SE Apex costs $14,000 less over five years than the WRX in Premium trim. That's a lot of extra dough to enjoy some "vroom vroom" on the way to work. The CVT system actually includes a separate first gear. In hard acceleration to 65mph, you are only going to use 1st and 2nd gear anyway, so it is almost equivalent to a geared automatic. Plus, you get the CVT efficiency for highway cruising. I am sure the Toyota engineers were thinking along these lines. If the Apex handles well, it can certainly be called a sports car, despite its small engine. The first Porsche 911 of the 1960s/early 1970s only had about 160hp, and the original Miata NA had only 116hp from its 1.6L engine. Today, sub-200hp Miatas are still setting great track times. The reviewers should have taken this car to the track -- maybe, a track for slower speeds, like an autocross course. I personally used to drive an NA Miata modified to "SCCA spec Miata" standard, including suspension, exhaust and tire upgrades, which was previously owned by an avid autocross enthusiast. It was a lot of fun, especially with the all-manual steering rack. Naturally, I would be interested in a four-door version of the same, but all we have here is "the ride is harsh," and "it doesn't have a powerful engine." In other words, "it's not a cushy highway cruiser;" and, "it's not an M3." We already know what it is not.

@@DodgerBlueRobert well, I just picked up a Cadillac ELR, $75,000 car when new, for $17,000. That is a screaming deal. It has 44,000 miles on it what fool would pay 20 + thousand for the lowly Corolla? That doesn't make sense. That old saying, a fool and his money...

I would argue that a lot of people my age (18-22) are kinda forced to learn how to drive stick, if we want more options when shopping the used car market. it seems like 40% of used cars nowadays are manuals from the mid-to-early 2000s, that’s what I ended up with. Thoughts?

My only complaint with modern iterations of Toyota's products is that their cars resemble 0% of old stuff. I wish modern corollas still had elements of the old ae101's. You know, when cars used to look like cars.

I feel if they just made the Corolla APEX as the normal Corolla SE price range, it would be great. pick it up for 22-24k in manual and it is a good reliable somewhat fun car. This can be an entry lvl car for newbies who want something a tiny bit fast with great handling. I believe this car was not meant for straight line racing or huge performance, it was meant for the togue, just like the AE86 Apex which had like 120 hp but great handling, weight, and size. The price is what makes the Corolla Apex bad though. Again, for 22 to 24 thousand dollars, this would be a good fun sports / daily driver.

MSRP is rumored at $26k for one of these but with so many better options to choose from out there, dealers might have to cut $5k off the price. I just don't understand Toyota and limpdicking their "performance" cars for the US market. They have the resources to make something insanely good. For example, the last gen Corolla chassis is a pretty good chassis. Would've been awesome to have a 2AR-FE under that hood with an LSD. Would've been a great 8th/9th gen Civic Si competitor back then. It just boggles my mind that they don't use the resources they already have. But hey, a 3 cyl turbo with over 200HP is coming out for the Corolla! Like no other car in their lineup is using that motor (besides other GR cars of course) and the car will most likely cost well over $30k. Quite a good chunk of change for the average blue collar worker.

The Corolla apex is not available in my country however a base model manual Corolla seems to outperform the competition at the low end of the market more power than it's competitors independent rear suspension manual option

If they’d put the 2.5L Camry engine, manual trans, and limited slip diff in this thing and it would make sense. As is, you’re paying a ton to be beat up by harsh suspension, lo-profile tires, while listening to a cvt drone on. Nope.

Toyota: develops GR Yaris Also Toyota: Asks USA if they want the GR Yaris USA: YES WE WANT IT! Also Also Toyota: yea, nah; you get uprated Corollas instead kaythanksbye. That's what I think the "Apex" trim is doing, testing the waters & developing a trim between the regular corolla and the forthcoming GR Corolla, because there is going to be a substantial price difference between a Corolla and a GR Corolla. P.S. I want the GR Yaris, not a GR Yaris in a fat suit.

Realistically, naturally aspirated Toyota 4-cylinder; this could realistically last 300,000 miles or more. That's something I'd never say about _almost_ any other passenger car. This is for someone who wants a very good-looking car with blatantly obvious Sports styling. Something that gets very good fuel economy. Will just last and be hyper reliable for many long years to come. Will hold its value exceptionally well. And just NOT be a headache to own or service. It's for the non-enthusiast whose willing to put up with a stiffer ride, but wants better handling out on the road. If you're someone quite a bit older, you're disgusted by the level of inflation in your country, you're disgusted by the car-buying practices out there and all the games you have to play just to get a decent deal.... You buy an SE Corolla Apex. Cry literally once. Drive it 'til the day you die of old age or get too old and physically feeble to drive at all. Last car purchase of your life. Never deal with dealers ever again. (Assuming some idiot doesn't crash into it and total your car.) As morbid as that sounds, for non-enthusiasts; that sounds heavenly.

I actually liked how they actually made the Apex look like a bit like a cut-rate Lexus IS 350 F-sport. I honestly wished Toyota would have done a bit of tuning to the M20A-FKS to make it a little more powerful for the Apex edition. As it stands with the price, there are better picks out there, but alas Toyota reliability is and would always be a factor for long term ownership, which is where this makes more sense.

Im looking at a manual 2013 Hyundai Veloster for $4000 with under 100k. Saw an ad on FB for this car, looked it up, came here and boy it looks terrible for a $30,000 car. My 2004 GTO costs me $30,000, even though it was 16 years ago, its still a $30,000 purchase. I dont know what these manufacturers are thinking these days, over pricing these kind of cars. This kind of car should be $15,000 tops. Sentra used to be that price, now its in the $20's. There seems to be a giant window of opportunity for a company to sell a manual $15,000 sporty-ish basic car. Front or rear drive won't matter at that price. Becuase there is nothing other than a cheap Mirage at that price point.

Maybe if they added a bit more power (not much, like 15 hp and a bit more torque in the low end), it could definitely live up to its Apex namesake. Shame that they're making so few of them
