While the Geese and company usually do an exemplary job on the cars featured, sometimes they truly "don't get it." This review is one of those times. Sort of dour and humorless, IMO. The S52 is a wonderful engine and with the Dinan bits even better. I've got one, so I "know." :). It gives up little to the S54 at relatively sane driving speeds on public roads. On a more positive note, Jack adds a lot to the act, and Mark's camera work is exemplary as always.

I love my 2000 M Coupe! For me, it's the handling that's the star of the Clownshoe. Having driven an E46 M3 and supercharged E36 M3 (more powerful BMWs of the same vintage) along with 911s (993C2S and 996TT) and having also previously owned a 987 Cayman S (the latter having IMHO perfect handling characteristics), all I can say is that while the Coupe might not be as fast, and comparably has objective weaknesses in the handling department, it's precisely these qualities that make it interesting and fun to drive. It just doesn't feel like anything else. Stiffness isn't everything! And if you throw in coilovers and other suspension mods, the Coupe is basically as planted as the Cayman while retaining this weird "whip" handling quality that's hard to describe. Maybe it's body roll, maybe it's me about to be launched off the road, but it's intoxicating. I'm also 6'1" and have no real issues in the cabin - it can be a bit tight, but I like that feeling. I've driven it cross-country multiple times, it is a joy to spend time in. The Coupe is, undoubtedly, my forever car.

I drive one in Germany - actually a 3.0 with mostly M suspension parts - since 10 years and 90.000 km and I do not agree with several things: - I don´t know what this miata thing is in the US, but this is just something different in most ways. - seating position: It is NOT very much possibilities! NO steering adjustment. Seat rear only very limited. - It is not a short coming we will fit this engine product! You can expect that BMW had in its mind always an M version since E30 generation. - cheap development: M is always a "cheap" Version - IF you want to call it like this. Better engine and better suspension - that is what M is about (+some interior stuff) - yes it is soft and has a lot of travel - like ALL 90ies developed cars. - long gears:? I am not aware of a different gearbox for the US. Mine is: 55 km/h in 1. @6700RUM, 100km/h in 2 @ 6700 RPM and 244 km/h in 5. @ 6700 RPM, all tested with GPS 3500 RPM is 70 mph/120 km/h - I would say this is very high geared! -BUT is has character, beginning from the design to the way you sit in this car with extremely limited space in the front! - Your hand falls automatically on the gear stick - which is excellent! Never had anything close incl modern cars and 2019 Miata Coupe or 2008 JCW Mini that I had (awful gearbox) - Engine sounds great w/o exhaust terror like my 2008 JCW Mini e.g. - it turns great with a more sporty suspension - seating just in front of the rear tires is fun It is NOT all great an it revs like crazy! what you can see in mph. But the punch you get is just good for its league. My direct comparison to my 2008 JCW: 210 HP/ 1180 kg vs 231 HP/ 1350 - I "feel" waaaay more accelerated and thrilled by my Z3QP that the JCW - though they are probably even fast. Especially on Autobahn between 120 km/h and 200 km/h the Z3 feels faster. 70 to 130 mph. It is about the connection to the street. btw: I fitted an tent, a sleeping bag, cooker, cooling box, chair inside to a trip inkl. Subwoofer - all below the window area.

Dinan, based in Mountain View California is the best after-market parts manufacturer for BMW in North America. In fact, adding a Dinan tune is THE ONLY after market part that does not void the factory warranty of a BMW. Its not a surprise that the exhaust looks good after 20 years. Well i do like longer gearing ratios, as long as first gear is fully usable on public roads. With such kind of engines, 30 mph should be reached at about 6000 rpm in first gear and everythin above is an engine given bonus of speed. As for daily driving "normal" gearing ratios (~1000 - 1500 rpm every 5 mph) are far superior and you can still utilise the whole rpm band, if you downshift to at least first gear.

So, basically BMW has had VANOS, throttle body and rod bearing issues for almost 20yrs and still refuse to rectify it. This is the type of BS that keeps me from wanting to pick one up used. They should simply come out and say they purposely build these cars to fail with higher mileage. Incredible driving machines, and I keep slipping into wanting an M car used, but the fact you consistently hear problems across the board that cause catastrophic failures, and seem to be intended to fail, is what keeps me away.
@gabspopo23004 жыл бұрын
Vanos problems got solved. E36 S50B32s need 100 000 km vanos rebuilds. M3 E46s require them less frequently, and E92s not at all since the system is alot more simple. I've never heard of throttle body issues on E36 M3s S50 engines. The 6 itbs work perfectly well. As for rod bearrings, it's not an issue that can be solved. It is inherant to the engine's designs. Having long stroke engine perform as much as S50B32s, S54B32s and S65/S85s do leads to very heavy loads on the bearings naturally. And for some design reason they can't make the bearings larger so the issue continues. Lastly, the Eurospec S50B32, which I have, and have had, does not really suffer from rod bearing issues. It suffers more from idiot issues. I sold last year my M3 3.2 sedan which had over 200 000 miles. I had done the bearings at around that mileage and they were in very good shape. However, the car I bought was first hand, and the old man who sold it to me, and who'd used it everyday, did an oil change every 8000 miles or so, every year and some times twice a year. He waited untill the oil was at 100°C to really push it on. People expect from BMW M engines the same kind of reliability as basic BMW engines, with the same maintenance. The truth is you can't have both. Having an N/A engines which puts out 100hp/Liter will inevitably oblige some thorough maintenance. The only criticism I have to make towards BMW is letting people believe that 15 ou 20 000 miles intervals in oil change, is a good idea, when in reality the engines need 4 to 6000 miles oil changes max.
@BrakRulesAll4 жыл бұрын
Oh please. Don't perpetuate this crap. Yes, there are some vanos issues, but not major. Throttle bodies? No. Not on this car, not on any S54. The Z4M has proven to be a VERY stout car overall. Rod bearings? Yeah, eventually, though many have gone well over 100k miles without touching them. The paranoia over this stuff has been amplified on the interwebs by people who don't even own these cars.

My dad had a 2000 M Roadster that we did some mods to and by the end was at 300whp. The mod list was fairly long and it was a blast to drive. Definitetly the better looking version of the car compared to the coupe.

Great video, once again. It made me go back and watch the Z4M video. After watching them, I am thinking that it would be quite informative to see your review of a first and/or second-generation Cayman S and how it compares to the Z3/4M. Please, find one or both to review...you mention the Z4M basically being the best driver's car you can get for the price (when referring the $37k used tag), but I think the Cayman is possibly even better!

Check out Richard Hammond's comparison of Z4MC and Boxster S on KZbin . Fun and good conclusion.

If you can, can you review the 2004 Chevrolet Monte Carlo SS Dale Earnhardt edition like the one RCR did few weeks ago, I wanna see your take on it

As an S50 owner, there really isnt any rod bearing issues compared to the S54. Maybe 1% of what the S54 has. I honestly cant even think of the last time I saw or heard someone that had rod bearing failures on a S50B30/32.

I always thought this car looked good, most people don't even know what I'm talkin about when I say Z3 M coupe, sat in on at the Javits center in NYC years ago, what don't people like, the 2nd generation came with 330 hp, 6 speed manual, fully independent suspension, I think it looks like its inspired by the Jaguar E type sort of.

Can you please review the new caddy with the dual volute turbo system and figure out why it exists if it's worse than a v8

Is it just me or is the hood shot at 11:16 totally not the Z3. That looks like a Porsche front with the 2 bulging headlights lol

I still went ahead to sacrifice the body structure & collected a 2002 Roadster 3.0 w/ OEM hardtop in order to widen the rear (for passing) visibility: 10:08 Btw, is M's LSD better (or more predictable, etc.) than 3.0's Torsen?

Nice vid... although just one 'negative' comment... maybe crop out the Porsche bonnet and wings for the forward facing rolling shots in the future. It's okay to pretend... just don't make it too obvious ;-)
