hi greenviper. in actual fact the traders do pay a fee each week which goes towards clean up of the square and special events which the traders themselves organize and give a lot of their free time to do so. and during the winter months when no tourists are seen its the local people that shop every week at the market. i am a year round trader and i love the market and am very grateful to the townspeople of bantry for there continued support.

back in the early 70s when i was a very young girl we used to come over to Bantry bay, my mums home town, for 4 weeks of each school holiday, i always remember on the friday market day when we arrived it allways rained like it wouldnt stop for a month and then the rest of the holiday was absolutely gorgeous weather, i do hope you all realise how special your home town is :o) i would move there tomorrow if i could

@HadesDarquecoat Touche, point taken. Ideally the stall holders would appoint a market foreman to gather fees and then to organise a clean-up squad afterwards. That would certainly give the anti's less ammunition...

More people need to fight for the right to have this market stay the way it is. My own message to Bantry businesses is simple - no market = no business. I shop in Bantry because of this market and spend some of my money in the 'established' shops as a result - but if the market is diminished, as I believe it would be by the proposed measures, there will be nothing to bring me to Bantry and I will go elsewhere. We need some people-power to support this market which is very special.

Fair point but at the end of the day, there is a lot of money being taken away by the traders from the local shop. Which in my opinion is not fair, because traders don't have to pay rates unlike the local businesses

my point being that its not doing bantry any favours by being there in the first place, in my opinion

@HadesDarquecoat I can understand the frustration with litter - but that is a specific problem that can be looked at. It comes down to the fact that the facilities are not in place - last Friday the litter bins were already full from the night before it seems. And I did witness what appeared to be local residents loading domestic refuse into the bins on one occasion. Or do you have evidence that is actually the market traders who leave the mess? If so, then that could probably be tackled too.

@HadesDarquecoat Local businesses don't give a toss about the litter - it's just another stick with which to goad the council

@HadesDarquecoat Can you explain what you mean by local business people paying for the clear up? Are they charged a specific amount for it or do you mean that they are paying through their business rates?

@androcles6795 pass this link around, with enough views and comments we might get something rolling. According to latest reports Bantry council wants to meet with local businesses to discuss the fair - no talk of meeting with the stall-holders or the citizens...
