Thank you for the info regarding Winter time algae growth and beneficial bacteria "going to sleep", was worried I was doing something wrong. Now know just to be patient and let it sort itself out a bit. Nitrates are holding steady so rather fish be happy then my eyes.

This is helpful because we have one small 100 gallon pond with a copper pipe water curtain built over it but would like a much larger one now that we have caught the “pond bug” 😂. Saving money doing it (except on a good liner) is key to success for us. The economy is CRAZY right now, so budget is tighter than usual. Thanks for your tips and tricks to save money building components!

Hi... love the videos... you inspired me to build a 4 foot deep pond with a bog filtration system/ waterfall... your diagram really did help me... literally paused to recreate it on paper... my pond looks incredible... did everything you suggested in your videos... only having one question... how do you get water to flow in the corners?... there are a couple of little areas that it just sits and I am afraid I my attract mosquitoes.... could really use your expertise.... thank you so much
@Ozponds2 жыл бұрын
If the pond is big I have a seperate pump that I connect jets, these push water out of those corners (dead zones, no flow). Alternatively I’ll get a few solar pumps and position them in those zones just to push water out. Hope that helps 👍

I’ve had a pond for a couple years now and every spring and fall I’d have to take the layered filter I made apart and totally clean pond out big job then it still got green , but now since I made your bog filter I’m so happy and my friends are shocked they can see the fish which are very happy thank you so much 👍😎

A tip for the future, don’t take the layered foam filters apart and clean them. A rinse in pond water is ok, but when they are thoroughly cleaned, especially with chlorinated tap water, or dried out, it kills all the bacteria that keeps your pond healthy.

I already knew I should probably start small, but I designed my 30,000 gallon swim pond first after seeing these videos 😂. I guess I'll get to design a 8x8 foot 50 gallon pond/stream now... Not anywhere near as exciting, but I could probably do it before winter, instead of in 10 years 😉

You learn a lot on your first pond. Where my big pond sits, I had a smaller pond, it taught me a lot. I’m still learning everyday, I could do better if I started building tomorrow. Maybe one day Mrs ozponds will let me move somewhere tropical and I’ll get to build another big one.

I’m having so much fun listening to your videos! I have a question and one of your videos may answer it. How do you treat newly bought plants to keep unwanted critters out? I bought some water hyacinth and gave them good rinsing. They were infested with leeches. Used the bleach method on them but obviously it didn’t work. Always had leeches after that. I’m in love with your dram pond!
@Ozponds2 жыл бұрын
I’m not really sure. I’ve got snails and fish that have come in on plants I purchased. Now I just propagate my own.
@taylortisaac2 жыл бұрын
Bleach is one method. Hydrogen peroxide is another. You may want to try that in the future as it’s not as hard on the plants. Not sure how well it will do on leaches. You may consider starting a good colony of Mosquitofish in your pond. They breed prolifically and will devour unwanted water critters. You could even have a separate mini pond or patio pond (in a container of some sort) with Mosquitofish in it that you can place your new plants for a few days. Just some thoughts!

Would be interested seeing more about how you handle a pre-filter over your pump for small ponds. Seems like it creates a lot more work, but would handle the issue if clogging the pump and polishing the water.

I only squeeze out that sponge every 6 months or so. Not all sponges are created equal.

Just found your channel, Thanks for such good info. When it rains very heavily, where does all the extra water flow? Do you just allow it to overflow into the garden ?. Do you get fish washed away?
@Ozponds2 жыл бұрын
Most of my ponds it just overflows into the garden. My largest pond (dream pond) has a dedicated overflow. I haven’t had any fish wash away. At least not that I’ve noticed.

Hey Kev, I’m in western Victoria and new to ponds, my first pond I set up in the autumn just gone. I am about to do a spring clean because of the strong algae growth and to freshen up for summer. I noticed that the plants I added are outgrowing their original pots. I bought those fabric aquatic pots but I can’t seem to figure out what potting mix to use to repot them. I have to keep them in pots as it’s only a small 500 litre patio pond with 3 gold fish so m not much room!
@Ozponds2 жыл бұрын
Water Lilies like a heavy soil, not the normal potting mix you buy that has lots of bark. I usually just dig up some soil from the garden (I have a clay type soil). All other aquatics I prefer to plant in gravel (you could still use pots). This forces them to consume nutrients from the water. Hope that helps.
@nikkivangaans15562 жыл бұрын
Yes it does, thanks!!!!

For the pumps why wouldnt the DCP15000 always be better? If i understand correctl its cheaper, higher flow, less power consumption and better head height then the aquasurge?

Lots of plants around the pond. If it’s on a patio with no garden use potted plants. Create a little oasis 👍

Does the direction of the flow for the bog filter matter? Could the bog and the skimmer be consolidated into one, that way the output could be more simplified?
@Ozponds2 жыл бұрын
You could. If you look at the intake bay on my dream pond is pretty much a reverse bog filter. Just remember that when it comes to biological filtration it’s all about surface area for bacteria. Therefore the skimmer or intake bay will need to be quite large to achieve the same results. Hope that helps.

Great video as usual. Thanks for sharing your knowledge with us. Your underwater shots show many plant stems that are obviously making many hiding places for fish. Would you please name what some of these plants are as I want to replicate similar growth in my fairly bare rocky bottom?
@Ozponds2 жыл бұрын
I use to have vallisneria (eel grass) but it was too vigorous and started becoming a sediment trap, so I removed it. The plant stems you’ll see on most of the underwater shots are water fringe. It’s like a mini water lily it does spread so it also needs removal from time to time.
