I'm one of those who has a very low income, way below the poverty standard. But to eat plant based is literally investing in my health as I have chronic conditions. When I look at what I save on medical costs versus my food costs it is much cheaper to just let food be my medicine. Thank you Hannah and blessings and peace be upon you and your house.

@@sasavs9398 It’s her job, yes, but I’m sure she started her channel to inspire people, and it’s hard to take inspiration or advice when you can’t afford what they’re “selling.” Personally, I think Fully Raw Kristina’s diet is ridiculously restrictive. Not to say that Hannah hasn't struggled, but for me to actually being living below the poverty level ( I'm talking neither me or my husband have a job right now, my mom is sending me $200 every two weeks to live off of, only having literally $10 to my name, and living in an RV) I can personally say that you can either make vegan affordable or you can make it expensive. Things like potatoes, rice, beans, oats are cheap. But dates where I live are almost $10 for a small box. The only store options for my area are Dollar General. To get to a food lion takes me 30mins and the Harris Teeter, which has better fruit/veggie options (but super expensive) in about 45mins. And to add, my husband and children don't eat vegan so I still have to buy them meat. I ended up applying for food and nutrition services (food stamps) and we go to the local food pantry every other Saturday. I get bored easily with my food and eating the same beans, rice, potatoes gets old. I eat A LOT of fruit. I will say it takes a lot of ingredients to make vegan food. I end up buying the same staple items and that helps cut down on cost.

Thank you Hannah for all your vegan content! I am a mom of 2 and the only vegan in my family (so far) and we lost our home in June but we are traveling with my husband for work and going with the flow to see where life takes us. Having only take out food, microwave, and sometimes a mini fridge on the road has been tough when I’m so use to my home made vegan meals, but I’m keeping my head up and looking forward to an amazing future with my husband and children and know that I will be making vegan food in my kitchen once again. I love your sister too! I recently commented on her podcast with Alicia Silverstone which was amazing! Thank you to all you vegan ladies for keeping me motivated!

I find it funny when people say eating vegan is expensive…. I’m like - beans, lentils and rice is expensive? Oats and chopped apple is expensive? What do they really think people living in low income family’s in developing countries are eating? I personally choose to pay extra for organic because it’s an investment in my health. If I have my health then I can work to earn more money, if I’m chronically Ill and not feeling good, to me that is what would be costly.

I would also like to mention that shopping local produce is about the same price as buying organic but a lot more environmentally friendly and likely to be more nutritional than shopping at the grocery store. And the great thing is that most local farms have volunteering programs in exchange for produce, and most big farmers markets have an EBT exchange program. In Idaho you can do this through backyard harvest, but if you are unsure about if your market offers this option you can always ask your local markets manager(s).

You are absolutely correct, Hannah! I was in a situation where all I could afford were rice and beans, maybe a bottle of wine here and there, crackers and tomato soup, greens, nuts, etc. You get the picture. I had to cut back and I started with the non-necessities such as cable. internet, etc. It was a choice I had to make because I was going to lose my house, car, or both. I didn't pay attention to organic food. I just purchased what I could afford, but I knew I couldn't afford animal protein. As it turned out I was in the best health as a result. I couldn't afford entertainment so I spent time in nature walking. It was a blessing. I know there are those with families and can't just get out for a nature walk but find what you can do in the confines of your home. Let go of the non-necessities...you'll survive.

Good quality vegan food outside of canned beans and rice typically does cost more than animal products. For instance if I were to get some seitan sandwich meat from Sweet Earth, The typical cost is 5$ per 2 servings but if I got Turkey deli it’d be 5$ per 8 servings. You see this pattern again and again for all of the higher quality vegan foods, including the nut based dairy alternatives, breakfast bars, milks, and protein foods. It’s especially frustrating for me since I’m trying to build muscle and it’s really hard thru plant based sources.

Ayyy, I think it's important to note that, while it's optimal to eat organic, if you literally cannot justify it, eating conventionally grown plant based is still valid and will still reduce your ecofootprint. There are a few veg that you really should prioritize eating organic where possible (i'm looking at you kale, spinach, apples, any of the dirty dozen). Learning to use your scraps will be so helpful. Also, bulk bulk bulk. If you're in the US, Winco, Sprouts, and Natural Grocers have great bulk sections. Sometimes these stores have clearance sections and you can get your favorite processed vegan alternatives on the cheap as a treat (like, recently I got miyokos vegan cheese for $4 off).

I feel like this is also a cultural problem. The percentage of their own money, spend per person on food, varies greatly in different countries; the US belongs to one of the countries that spends the least for food. It’s interesting that veganism is perceived to be expensive in the us. In Germany I noticed that it is definitely seen as the cheaper option. Sure there are brand items for meat replacements, that cost a pretty penny. BUT quite a few budgetfriendly supermarkets offer a wide range of vegan substitutes, that are priced lower/similar to regular animal Produkts!

Here is my 2 cents. I live in NYC and I am vegetarian (I don't eat dairy). I have compared my grocery budget with my omnivore friends and they definitely spend more money. But I will say that vegan/vegetarian lifestyle requires a LOT of cooking. Call it healthy(ier) but it really does. For me personally buying all those dairy and meat replacements is what adds to the bill. As far as Trader Joe's or WF, I consider them both expensive. I usually buy at local supermarkets or Asian stores or any other ethnic store. But I am well aware that is the advantage of living in NYC.

I think the biggest cost of a plant based diet is time. Plant based foods are the cheapest foods one can buy: legumes, grain, vegetables, even fruit. However, these affordable foods require time and effort to prepare them into meals. Cooking everything from scratch - plus marketing, meal planning, and kitchen clean up and maintenance - is a full time job. The same is true for omnivorous diets, so it isn’t just a plant based thing. The solution becomes either buying a lot of ready-made foods (frozen dinners, cereal, canned soup, toaster waffles, etc.), eating at restaurants (one can always work whilst waiting for the food to be prepared), or hiring a home cook (which almost no one does anymore). Bottom line is that I don’t think the cost of food and food prep is a vegan issue; I think it’s an everyone issue, and is partly responsible for the obesity epidemic, because ready-made and restaurant meals tend to be much more calorically dense than their homemade equivalents.

Veganism is still cheaper than any other diet in 2023. I bought a week of groceries for $26 dollars. All whole foods plant based 90% organic. I have a vegan pantry that took me months to establish so now I'm not constantly going to the store for my grains, legumes, and spices. Canned vegetables and frozen (which I prefer) save me a ton of money. Cheap fresh veggies are usually your roots and tubers as well as cabbage family. I get fresh greens because I can. Not in huge quantities because it's just me. I find hummus and tahini to be more economical than avocados. The great thing about berries and other fruits is that you can freeze them for a smoothie later. I give myself a budget of $75 per week for groceries in case I want to eat out but eating out is too expensive.

I am not a vegan; but I agree with you totally that buying meat and dairy for each meal is way more expensive. Also I have noticed over the years, that the first thing people cut back on is good food when they need to budget instead of so many other things that they could cut back on.

Straight up we don’t buy organic but we grow organically (beyond organic, no sprays) so probably half of what we eat is organic. But we are POOR (according to the govt). We honestly don’t know how we would be able to afford food for our family if we DIDNT eat plant based! A pkg of meat that would feed our family is about $18 right now. Oooor, we could eat beans for our protein and feed my 10 person family for $1. ONE DOLLAR. What?!?! Our grocery bill has gone up about $100/week over this past 2 years. Yikes! But still, I feed a family of 10 (kids ranging from 16-2) for $250/week breakfast, lunch, and dinner (we don’t eat out). The thing that holds people back from going plant based around me (poor rural) is their fear of lack of protein.
