Seems like chickens are a lot like a minivan full of kids. Once they get bored the fighting starts. "Mom, he's touching me!" I put a swing and a pile of branches in the yard and the fighting stopped. It was like a miracle. 😃

I have been able to keep 7 roosters in one 40x40 run by allowing bushes to grow in the run (they don't see each other constantly) and by giving them things other that each other to mess with. I can't discount having a spectacular rooster that keeps the others from getting out of hand.

I once picked some dandelions that were growing in my front yard and gave them to my chickens. I figured they'd be fine since hubby hadn't sprayed out there in ages. But they wouldn't touch them. However the ones I pick in the back yard, where we never spray, they'll gobble up happily! Not saying deliberately give your birds stuff from where spraying has happened, but if it happens by accident, they might be smart enough to know something's not right with them.

Go to your local coop (grainery) to get feed. If you find somebody that an old barn has collapsed go knock on a door and see if they will let you take some of the barn wood. We have made so much from old barn wood. We burned and linseed oiled our entire run. Grow a garden of staple items, we have zucchini, squash, cucumbers, sugar snap peas, find a local mealworm farm. I would give anything to have someone in Michigan or Ohio to support and buy live mealworms from. I'm not crazy about starting my own. I buy pumpkins, near the end of the season and cook them and separate into portion sizes for my dogs now I will do for my chicks as well. Next year we will plant our own. I started herbs this season. Trade with a neighbor or friend. Our neighbors make honey with their bees so we swap for eggs. We used old landscaping pavers to create dust bath area we purchased Mason sand from Menards entire bag was 4.99 plus 11% off. I get our coarse sand from one of the landscaping companies. Just some ideas instead of tractor supply and farm companies they tend to be pricey.

I have an old cooking pot I throw leftovers and scraps in and make rice for my chickens. If you have extra eggs that don’t get eaten, you can hard boil them in the rice to feed back to chickens, shell and all for nutrients. They love it!!! 🥚🍳 🍚🐔

Thank you for the video of tips! Another idea is to put some kitchen scraps on a plate next to an anthill, and once the plate is full of ants and scraps, I transfer it to the coop for my birds to enjoy :)

When I first started with chickens we got 3 production brown layers and one of them loved devouring ant nest's, the other two didn't like ants crawling up their legs and would only join their sister once she had devoured most of them, I've only got my silkies, polish n gold top bantam (Silkie rooster x light Sussex hen/also a sex linked breed)hens and they don't even like spiders 😄 but they do love dandelions and other weeds,I just have to keep them away from my rhubarb, potato and tomato plants cos they eat everything in their path 🤦🙄

my chicken eat long grass all the time they are free ranged when I am here, and they love so many weeds itis funny watching them, I feed them kale, cabbage, meal worms when I have them, strawberries, in fact I have a bunchof them sitting on the table that I will feed them when I let them out later and feed them squash when I have it, i also give corn on the cob, watermelon and cantelope salads greens, once in a while I give them left over rice and spegetti, they love it, last night I had augratin potatoes and a little meat loaf left over and they went crazy for it, so they also have their layer feed too. and plenty of fresh clean water.

There is some waste land near my house, which used to have cattle on it. Very lush vegetation. I walk my dog there most days, and pull out some of the weeds for my chooks. They love it, especially puha and dandelions. They are still laying strong (one egg each per day) even though this is mid winter (the shortest day today) in New Zealand.

I had the crop impaction issue with long grass. When they graze they nip off manageable bits, but the cut grass was a disaster for us😢. You are so spot on about the branches and leaves!

Haha, I see my little Squatch every day! I like to build my birds a fort where they can hide from hawks or get some shade. After having to get too many staples out of the burn pile with a little hand magnet, this year's fort is woven from supple branches. It's held up by scavenged supports--an adjustable frame from a kid's synth-drum kit and a tubular-steel chair base attached to the branch frame with garden wire. I inserted panels cut from plastic signage for rain protection here and there. Then I trimmed bushes and covered it with leafy branches that hang down. I saw their little feet under it and said, "It's IZBUSHKA!" In folktales, the Russian witch Baba Yaga's house had chicken feet, and it would wander about the woods. The new fort's design makes it mobile--I can pick it up and move it wherever the birds want it. So instead of being Fort Mealworm again, this year it's Fort Izbushka!

I watched your video about pecking order determining who gets food first and last. A couple of my chickens wouldn't eat much while others stuffed themselves, so, I put the food in a few dishes spread around the area and that solved the problem. The pecking order didn't matter much this way and the ones at the bottom of the pecking order got healthier because of it.

My neighbors thought I was really strange for going down the driveway and picking dandelions and clovers from the edges of their yards. Once I explained that I pick them for my chickens, geese, ducks and turkeys they told me I could go into their yards to pick the weeds. They say it's a win/win. My birds get good, chemical free greens and they get weeds taken from their yards for free. 🤣. My birds have about an acre they free range on, but only about 1/3 of it has edible vegetation. Around half of the property has a huge circle of cedar trees so nothing grows there aside from the occasional mushroom that is in a symbiotic relationship with the trees. Birds won't touch the mushrooms, though. But anyway, the three geese keep all the grass and weeds cut. I don't even own a lawnmower anymore. 😂. So two to three times a week I go collect a 5gallon bucket full of mostly dandelion and clover, but also some grass and wild lettuce. It turns into party time when I go dump it in the back yard for them. 😁

The episode on how to stop a broody chicken I watched. I saw where it took you a couple tries at taking your hen for a car ride before it worked. I did this same thing from your advice a week or so ago. It worked for a time but she was right back in her nesting spot . So what I did was take a large frozen rubber water bottle rapped in a towel . Gently slide it under her as I talked baby talk to her. She made no move or sound during the process. She continued to set on it for maybe an hour or less while I observed. Sure enough she got up on her own and left the coop. She stayed out of the coop for some time before going back in and then back out. So far she's not brooding anymore fingers 🤞🤞. Never the less, no harm or inhumane treatment was done .

My car was out of commission, so I tried taking my Buff Orp Goldie for a walk around the neighborhood. I stopped at a church's outdoor meeting area that had picnic tables pushed together in long lines. I put Goldie at the end of one and walked to the other end. She was so disoriented she just stood there! As we went along, I'd put her down somewhere and walk away, then let her take in her surroundings. After a few stops, I took her home. We'd been out 30 minutes, and she was deprogrammed!

@@chuckvenable4409 I had no idea if it would work, but she'd been diligently trying to hatch some dead eggs for 6 weeks, and I had to do something to give my poor Goldie her life again. After the walk, I let her roam the yard as I removed the eggs and the nest and put other stuff in that space. She poked around it and muttered for a while, then went outside to be with her sisters. I was so relieved!

I have a compost pile in my chicken yard. Food scraps, grasses, wood chips, weeds from the garden, sod when I put in trees. Then I sprinkle some of their crumble on it or trow some sunflower seeds in it each day. They love it! I just rake it up at night.

Mine live on my backyard free range and weeds as well as the feed and worms I give they are very happy and healthy I pick up their poo and throw it in my composter ! Mine free range. We are surrounded bu large trained lgds, im currently training a lgd, and we have 12 geese, 9 of whom are canada geese . Imo, canada geese are a natural deterrent for avian and amall predators because most have experienced their aggression in the wild and know they are very territorial. I'm not saying itd fool proof, but it has worked for me, so far. (I aquired my animals legally and have the proper permits to own them)

My husband & I just rescued our first Rooster and Hens. 3 hens (probably older) & one mean Polish Rooster. Lol. We don't know much about how to take care of them but so far they seem happy & Healthy. We have a couple milkweed plants come up in their run each year, and I always left them because the Monarch caterpillars eat the plant as their only food source. My girls have never shown interest in it, probably because of all the scraps and snacks we give them! A couple of weeks ago I cam home to all of the milkweed plants nibbled down to the stalks!! I freaked out, thinking it was going to make them super sick, so gave them lots of fresh water hoping they would flush it out of their system. Nothing ended up happening to them thank goodness!

Great video; a little imagination can save a lot of money! Just wondering--when offering grass clippings or hay to chickens, wouldn't it help to have plenty of grit in their diet? I remember my mother always being particular about making sure hers got to peck around in areas where it was sandy with tiny pebbles, and she said it was to make sure they had enough grit for their crops. Maybe that's what's missing from the diets chickens that got impacted crops? Just wondering...

Another problem with chickens that have health issues that they didn't have hundreds of years ago has to do with the over breeding of chickens to produce an outrageous number of eggs. With the increased egg production comes increased stress on their bodies and health. I have only Barnevelders which only produce around 180 eggs per year, instead of over 300 for the over-bred chickens, and they have very few health issues.

I’ve recently had a branch fall covered in moss. I took pieces of it into to coop. They loved it. Scratch off all the moss and probably found some bugs buried in it. I’ve also pulled branches from our burn pile that had fallen through the winter and use them as roosts in their run and tractor. Unfortunately they have to be in a tractor because we have lots of hawks. One has been tormenting the wild birds lately. It knows they nest here and it’s been getting into their nests 😢. I hear the birds going crazy and shortly after see the hawk fly across the yard and the birds chasing it. I’m sure it would go for my chickens if it could.

My wife and I have lived in the country for 2 yrs now. We just got our first 6 hens. They are about to go outside after I build their 12x12 run. I want to let them free range most of the day unattended as most of the people around us do hut my wife is most worried than I am about predators during the day mainly hawks etc. How worried should I be? Aren’t the chances of another bird of prey grabbing them pretty slim? Like i said I see chickens out and about all the time. I think the biggest daytime threat are cars.
