Brian I don't know you personally but thank you. As a future music educator I thank you from the bottom of my heart. People need to understand what the arts are actually for thank you so very much for these words and the passion you have shown

Brian, I'm one of the countless kids who benefitted immeasurably from your dad's music instruction. Thank you for this impassioned message, and for the work you're doing.

Bravo, Brian! Keep fighting the good fight! We as music educators have always had to fight for our programs. You raise some good points - no, administrators do not understand the power of music and what it does for brain development. No, administrators don't understand the power of music and what it does to create a sense of community (as you eluded to). No, administrators don't understand that music reaches populations of students that "don't get it" in their core subject, but do get it when there are connections made through music. Music is not math, science, or reading, but music reinforces math (counting, note values), reading (decoding, sight reading) and science (acoustics and physic in general) as a matter of course! Thank your for posting this video. Keep fighting the good fight. Love your passion.

Thank you for this. We've seen this exact same scenario play out in the secondary schools in our district - music is not specifically preserved, so principals whittle what is there away to preserve core class sizes or cut the programs entirely. Administrators truly do not understand the needs of a growing program. I will share this on our advocacy page. Our area finds the arts to be very important so we find a lot of support when we rise up to fight. I am proud (*and horrified at the same time) to say that we 'only' lost one class/program this year. Thank you again for say what needs to be said. I would welcome the opportunity to chat with you further to shamelessly plug for a message like this one personalized to our district, or even a short message to cheer on the students as we all fight together.

There is so much research on the benefits of music and arts in education. Why are they so easily offered up as a sacrifice to the budget gods by administrators and politicians? Imagine our society without the healing power of music.

Yes! Spot on as always Brian. Unfortunately the scene in Atlanta has played out in far too many smaller, less visible towns. How many large districts will slash arts programs, essentially cutting themselves off at the knees, before any sort of alarm is sounded at the National level?
