Playing dumb might have played against your hand. I buy stuff from people all the time, and being honest and showing that you know and care about what they have goes a lot further than pretending that you don't know anything about it in my experience. It might not have worked either way on her, but if her husband knows you have an interest in restoring it, he might budge on it, especially if he doesn't have time to do it himself. Hopefully either you can get it, or someone (maybe even the owner) will have it restored one day for people to enjoy.

I think making an online petition to get the owners to sell you the statues could possibly work. Or a petition to have it "rescued" so the owners can see the overwhelming response. Afterwards, we can get a kickstarter fund to help you buy it from them or help you restore it !

That's so awesome that so many people cared about preserving this that it could get that much traction! Sega World sounds like it was a lot of fun :) Seems like they were pretty intent on not giving it up but hey, money talks. You could try crowdfunding I suppose and then with any overage give it to a charity perhaps? At least that way if you went back to them it wouldn't be empty-handed and maybe if you could illustrate to them somehow the passion of all of the fans that want to see it preserved you could appeal to their humanity. Not sure what their tone was like in turning it down, but having evidence of fan desire to maintain an artifact of Sega history and giving them the knowledge that to do so would be charitable might be helpful :) Or take the extra dough and offer to get them a phone 😂

If anyone is confused about the “miniature” version of the statue, it is pretty large, just a tad bit smaller than the one outside, for the smaller version it was housed indoors at the park according to a reliable source. Either way, it’s really cool that at least some form of that beloved statue exists! What happened to the original? I would really like to know!

I like how the Sega World of Japan statue is in better condition than this. Yes, it was gifted, but still. The statue has been left in the woods. Only tied with plastic. Those statues were behind a gate, with no one touching it. No vandalism, No threat, and it still is in worse condition. This makes no sense!

Australian weather can harsh with hotter conditions than Japan. However it's quite possible that the quality of the Aussie statues is not as good as the Japanese version. However without knowing who actually manafactured the statues I am just speculating away here.

It's a damn shame, and that building in London isn't even a thing anymore, they've turned it into a hotel I believe now...no more awesome giant escalator :(! He knows what he's got. He wants $25k for the Wonderland sign. There was an episode of Better Homes and Gardens there once. He asked too much for everything and they just went to Bunnings instead. That Junkyard is where things go to die, he's a hoarder, it's all for sale if you're Scrooge McDuck but no one is stupid enough to pay up. It's a win win for him, he gets to extort Junk for large amounts of money when people are willing to pay and if they don't, he gets to keep his prized junk. I uploaded the pic to Facebook since I knew you guys would love to see some Sega/Sydney history, though I knew full well Sonic and Sally are going to die there. It's their grave. They are also recent additions, they weren't there until recently. I visit that yard somewhat regularly. They know what they have and know full well what you're talking about for future reference. I think it would be hard to convince the current owners. They know the value first off. That right there means that they won't turn it over so easily. Obviously you don't want to steal it either. The other thing to consider is what do you plan on doing with it? You want to save it, but what plans would you have to do with it and or where would you put it? Unless there is a sonic museum (which I don't think their is), it would be in the hands of a private collector/fans. So no one else but the private collector would then see it. Even as a community if you managed to earn a large of money, where/who would get the statue and how would you preserve it? Most people who are art historians would say that anything that is considered art that is in rough condition should slightly be left that way so it doesn't take any more damage or ruin the value. Yet, if you wanted to restore it, I think the challenge could be either making the missing pieces and or restoring the paint by color matching. I think the best bet is if you do manage to save it is do a bit of cleaning, but keep it in its state condition and put it under glass.

i know this is probably not the best plan of action, but have you offered to try and help the owner repair and fix it up for him, painting him etc, he wouldnt be yours and is probably just making it a more profitable piece for the owner, but depends how badly you wanted to save and preserve him. Plus maybe if you are honest and open about once working at Sega, and wanting to restore it, they may be more inclined to come to an arrangement. By the fact they say its not for sale, to me says they may have some form of attachment or personal story behind the statue and/or character. Meaning you could potentially pry away using their nostalgia or love for the character etc etc.
