my first problem with Set Pieces is that I rotate my team all the time... there should be an automatic option to always put the taller/"jumppier" players inside the area... :p

But that's exactly how it works in real life too, teams dont rehearse set pieces for every possible line-up. Most teams send central defenders forward on attacking corners & task full-backs with throw-ins, evaluating team shape over individual skill. Regarding free-kick takers, I've found that the AI usualy picks the right man if you leave it to it. An informative and entertaining video, as always! More of the same, please!

The number one most important thing that's overlooked about set-pieces is training. Typically I am always training Delivery and Set Piece Defending on the last two days before matchday. The bonus you get is quite noticeable and very time efficient.

Near post corners to a player with good heading and jumping are seriously OP. When I have my striker going through one on one with the keeper, I genuinely get more excited at the prospect of scoring from the resulting corner than I do from the intricate play that’s created the chance in the first instance. Sort it out, SI!

Just have to say that this video has changed my life! My FM life that is. Before this is didn’t score much from corners and conceded a lot. Now I score a few goals from corners using a player on the near post and now don’t concede so many at dead ball situations. With a tweak in my tactic (help from another video) I’ve now won the Dutch title in early March with 27 wins and 1 draw. So many thanks.

In my short corner routine (at least the ones that are add-on highlights rather than the start of the highlight) around half the time the taker passes short the team mate passes back to the taker who is off side. They never seem to learn from it.

I accidently had my GK as third thwor-in choice on right side. One game I was "hmm that name isn't that my goakeeper?", and we scored from that thro-in so he was promoted to first thro-in taker rest of the season, leaves more boddies up front, more boddies higher chance to score, flawless.

Ngl I have tried loads of different set piece tactics and in my experience its far more important how good your players are in the air. As long as you roughly have the big guys in the right areas it doesn't make a huge difference. Except I like having a player up the field because you get so many counters.

The majority of the goals I score are free kick / corner headers. When defending against those sweaty set piece goals, I put Håland near post. Have a man mountain who can head it away. Leave your rapid AML or AMR upfront to counter attack.
@lucacerullo34684 жыл бұрын
If you keep one player ahead to counterattack, the AI would put two defenders to mark him. I always do this to have more men than the opposition in my own penalty area. It's a good way to take two good players with good heading away from your goal as well.

"It's a good way to take two good players with good heading away from your goal as well." That's... not how it works...
@Teiwaz1114 жыл бұрын
IMO set pieces are the icing on the cake - at least the offensive one's. If you're constantly conceding goals and/or losing games because of a certain set piece (corners f.e.) go and try to fix it in your set piece routine(s). Sure, scoring goals obviously due to whatever you did in set pieces is super nice and gives you that "I'm a great manager" feeling but it's more often than not not the reason why you won a game. Also training good set piece takers is such a PITA - a player either got it or hasn't, don't bother much with anything else. Now some tipps regarding set pieces that Zealand might have already covered - just take it as an emphasis then. - Have your best (means strong, good jumping reach/tall) headers covering the 6-yard box for defense, good heading striker or tallest player (not covering the 6y box) on man mark tall player - The more you're afraid of conceding/losing due to set pieces, the more players you assemble in your penalty area - feeling comfortable, have your best vision & passing player covering the edge of the box, and a fast dribbler staying forward (you can go + on players staying forward) - Covering the far post is 9/10 not needed... and that one time you concede a goal on your far past you'll still feel dumb, but who cares. I'd rather have that one additional player doing stuff other than standing around - EVERYTIME YOU CHANGE YOUR FORMATION YOUR SET PIECES ARE F'ed UP! So don't forget to check and fix them if needed. This might not happen if you always load existing tactics (then any set piece routines should come along) but I don't do that, so...yeah... ;-) - For attacking corners I like to have my best header on the near post, a strong good header (mostly a striker) running into the box, and another good header on the far post - When playing it short on corners have your worst(! - means "not needed for anything else") player taking the corner - If you want to go more into opposition analysis: short corners or taking long shots (if you have a decent player) when your opposition beats you in regards to height and heading - Also every sub can screw up your set pieces, so check it if you care about it, if not, don't bother - I always have my FB/WB taking throw ins on their respective side, even if they are terrible at it. Don't play with FB/WB, take whoever is farthest back playing on that side. You can score through direct long throw ins but it's very rare so I wouldn't go for that option on a regular basis

Thank you for the advice that a guy should come short even if I go for a corner shot in the small box. He pulls a defender most of the time.
@gendicarla54294 жыл бұрын
If you want the pulling defender away effect to be alot more effective, try finding a player with 'Winds opponents up' Player trait (can't be coached only mentored sadly) Winding them up will make the defender more prone to aggression mistakes (several times a defender has just red card lunged in on my coming-short player 😂) Even if you don't play it short, the defender that you pulled will be temporarily 'Frustrated' by your jackass

One thing I would appreciate more information on is how the players familiarity vs competence vs ability vs links with other players affect their in game atributes, its difficult to tell which I should be prioritising to get the best out of my team... i started out just trying to get the fullest green circle i could but then realising its not always what the player is most comfortable with which doesnt really make sense

Statistically players on the post concede more goals than not marking post, at least in FM18 & 19. I will play 4 across the back. Tall CB marks tall. Fullbacks man mark. DM, & CM zone mark. 1 to close down area. 1 to close down short corners, & fastest player/best dribbler up top to provide an outlet. That routinely gives me one of, if not the, best corner defenses in league. I never, in any set piece defending setup, use "stay back." Because automatic settings assume your players can read a match state. This is never wise.

What about freekicks Zealand?
@Teiwaz1114 жыл бұрын
Not much different from corners - ball's coming from somewhere on the pitch that's not the corner. For attacking: same logic applies to free kicks as to corners (best headers, long shots, etc.) For defending: more dedicated man marking, 2-4/5ish players forming a wall (depending on how far out the FK is), fast players for counter attacks
