It was time to take a break from the cheap C5 since we're waiting on parts at the moment. I decided to pull out some other projects that need finished and sold while enjoying the weather. We were out washing all the cars when Jake called and said I'm stuck on the side of the road, I think it's a bad fuel pump. We hopped in the truck and headed out to find him. There was no fuel pressure after priming so we pulled the truck back to the shop to take a look at it. ‪@TheFracturedRooster‬ showed up when he saw the Ranger signal. We also learned we can do a Ford Ranger fuel pump in about 15 minutes flat now.

I had an intermittent problem like yours on my Bronco II. It turned out to be a rotted hose on the pump between the pump and fuel pickup screen. Over time ethanol in modern fuels had rotted the hose allowing air to get in the line. His pump was newer but it still might have the same problem. My pump was original 1986 Ford pump. Definitely due for replacement anyway.

I have a 2001 Ranger... It's the fuel pump. They bumped it enough to get it going for a little bit. If they smack the bottom of the tank with a hammer, it'll run for a little bit, then die again. I drove about 10 miles that way, pulling over when it died, smacking it, and driving a little further. Pulled up home, and that was all she wrote.

Jake should probably check the fuel filter first as it is a common problem on the 4 bangers if the system sees less than 14psi of fuel pressure it just won't start because it's not enough to allow a proper fuel spray in the cylinder to atomize correctly.

Well the Detail Dudes do, as they've used it a few times. But driving to the car wash also does a quick road test of the vehicle to ensure most things are still working as expected, cycles the gas out of the fuel lines, and is just fun if it's a Corvette.

Place I used to work had a fleet of early 2000's late 90's Ford trucks, Rangers, F150 and Vans. Every single one of them would eventually start either start hesitating or have long cranking times. Fuel pressure would be around 20 psi or less. Every single one had a crack in the rubber hose that ran between the pump and outlet on the fuel pump itself. Bought a small roll of in tank fuel line and replaced the hose when they would do that. Only cost a few buck and some time.

I'd check the fuel pump wiring around the connectors. My P30 Fed Ex van went through several fuel pumps until I realized that was my gremlin. I actually found it using a JC Whitney short detector. Where the wires made a sharp bend to meet the fuel pump, the insulation cracked, and gave me sporadic continuity.
