I see so many people bashing Doreen for being “ungrateful” for being alive, calling her annoying, saying she had an attitude, etc. You guys - what she went through was extremely traumatic. She was injured severely. She thought she wouldn’t make it, or ever see her family again. This was literally her worst nightmare come true. Yet, she tried her best to remain professional and get the passengers to safety. That’s commendable! She probably didn’t want to wear her uniform again because it brought up horrific memories for her. And that’s okay. Her feelings and her emotions are valid. None of us were there, and none of us have walked a mile in her shoes. Of course, she’s grateful for being alive, but that doesn’t invalidate the PTSD that she has to endure for the rest of her life. Show some compassion and kindness.

@35diamondgirl4 жыл бұрын
Watching these interviews now, conducted so soon after the forced landing in the Hudson River, it's easy to see how they're all still in at least a bit of shock not only from the event itself but also from the onslaught of media attention. Doreen Welsh never returned to her job as flight attendant; I recall her saying that she'd be unable to sit at the back of an airplane alone, that Sully and Jeff had had each other in the cockpit, that Donna and Sheila had been holding hands in the front of the cabin, but that she had been alone sitting in the back where the impact of the landing was most violent. Donna Dent and Sheila Dail did eventually return to flying, although both are retired now. Sheila Dail led and organized the effort to create a Critical Incident Response Team at US Air for flight attendants who experience emergencies and trauma in-flight (a Critical Incident Response Team existed for pilots at US Air, but not for flight attendants). Sully retired from commercial piloting in 2010 (two of his final three trips were with Jeff Skiles as First Officer) and became a public speaker and an outspoken advocate for aviation safety and the piloting profession in general; he also co-authored two excellent books. Jeff Skiles is still flying as a First Officer (by choice, I think) on the Boeing 787 Dreamliner, flying international routes. He also has a successful side career as public speaker, writer (he has been published many times in aviation journals/magazines), and expert witness on aviation matters. Both Sully and Jeff have testified on Capitol Hill numerous times on matters relating to aviation safety, and they were important advocates for the families of the victims of Colgan Air Flight 3407, which crashed en route to Buffalo just a month after Flight 1549, killing the 49 passengers/crew and one person on the ground. (In his memoir, Sully dedicated a chapter to Captain Al Haynes of United Flight 232 after Haynes had contacted him following Flight 1549 to offer support; Sully had been inspired by Haynes's heroic crew coordination and subsequent speaking career on aviation safety and other efforts on behalf of the victims.)

The “Miracle on the Hudson” was indeed a miracle when you consider the Fact that the Proper Procedures for an Emergency Water Landing (Ditching) of an Airliner were Not Fully Executed! - Two HUGE Mistakes were made in the "Miracle on the Hudson" Ditching: 1. Sully and his First Officer Failed to turn on the Ditch Switch before the ditching, and 2. The Air-Head Flight Attendant in the rear of the passenger cabin Doreen Welsh Failed to Speak Up and STOP the Ignorant Panicked Female Passenger from opening one of the Rear Emergency Escape doors after the ditching (which were both below the water line - and Should Never Be Opened after a landing in water!) As a result of these Two HUGE Mistakes - the passenger cabin began to immediately take on a LOT of water - rapidly flooding the passenger cabin with (Ice Cold) water - making the aircraft sink into the water Much Faster than it should have! And if it wasn't for NY Waterways being right there ASAP - many of the passengers in the Rapidly Sinking Airliner would have Drowned or Died of Exposure in the Ice Cold Water! So in reality - given the Two HUGE Mistakes that were made - it really was a MIRACLE that everyone was able to get away from that situation Alive! A Very Special Thanks is owed to NY Waterways and the Key Role they played in covering for the Blunders of the Flight Crew - The operators of NY Waterways were the Real Saviors of the day!
I can't image Ms Doreen.. She's real.. Leave your stupid comments about her to yourself.. God bless you Ms Doreen and the entire crew.. Sully and Jeff.. incredible human beings..

Doreen, the blonde next to Sully, was the most injured of everyone, and in the worst place of anyone on the plane. She was in the back, and when the plane hit the water, it was tail first... and part of the bottom/cargo area collapsed on impact, and pushed up, driving a beam through the floor and into her leg. She was the most at risk of dying out of everyone on the plane.

Even though both pilots were heroes, F/O Skiles didn't saw first. Sully saw first. But these both pilots did a good job. I knew this accident in 2017, 2018, 2019, 2020. Four years I could still believe that Nobody can't replace Sully.
@billdefalco93805 жыл бұрын
From another pilot's and frequent flyer's perspective - though the outcome was very good in that everyone on board survived, there were nevertheless very serious errors that were made by the pilots and the flight attendants which, if not for the rapid response by NY Waterways to the rapidly sinking aircraft, could have resulted in the drowning deaths of many of the people on board the ill-fated aircraft. The serious errors were: #1 - Failure of the flight crew to turn on the Ditch Switch, which allowed excessive amounts of water to enter the passenger cabin, #2 - Failing to alert everyone in the cabin over the PA system about the impending emergency water landing (ditching), and #3 - Failure of the pilot in command (and subsequently the Flight Attendants) to warn the passengers not to open either of the two rear emergency exits after the water landing - since both of those emergency exit doors will be below the waterline when the aircraft settles into the water after the ditching. In addition to the excessive amounts of water that entered into the passenger cabin from the flight crew's failure to activate the Ditch Switch, the failure of the flight crew and the flight attendants to warn the passengers not to open either one of the two rear emergency escape doors resulted in the passengers opening one of the rear emergency escape doors. This action allowed a huge amount of water to flood the passenger cabin that, along with the water entering the passenger cabin (from the Ditch Switch not been activated prior to the ditching) caused the aircraft to sink into the water at a much faster rate than it would have, if the proper steps were taken to keep water from entering the passenger cabin, which would have kept the aircraft afloat for a much longer time. The Saving Grace and the Real Miracle in this event was the fact that the aircraft was ditched in very close proximity to the NY Waterways boats, which were able to rapidly evacuate everyone from the rapidly sinking aircraft. Had the aircraft ditched further south in the Hudson River where it would have been too far away from the NY Waterways boats for them to get to the aircraft before it sunk, the outcome could have been catastrophic. A Final Important Note to Every Airline Passenger: - READ the Passenger Emergency Card when you settle into your seat! - And in particular - Be Sure to Read the section on the Emergency Exits, as it will clearly show you not only the location of all the emergency exit doors, but it will also show you which doors (typically the 2 rearmost doors) that should never be opened after an emergency landing in the water!

They were literally crashing into water. You don’t exactly have time to go through all those things in your head while faced with over a hundred other people attempting to exit the plane. Also, Doreen was injured and we don’t know what happened.
@brch24 жыл бұрын
1. They didn't have time to get through the proper checklists in the QRH, and likely just didn't think about the ditch switch while focusing on getting the plane down safely. Also, the rear of the plane was damaged, so water was getting in anyway. 2. Sully wanted the passengers focused on being in a brace position so they'd survive the initial impact, knowing the plane would float long enough to get them off, so he didn't warn them about ditching because he didn't want them moving around grabbing life vests, or doing anything else but being focused on being in the proper brace position so they'd survive. And he didn't have time to give a full spiel on what was about to happen, he had to focus on making it happen as safely as he could. 3. Doreen, the rear flight attendant, was the only one injured in the impact itself, was losing a lot of blood, and was in shock immediately after impact. It took her a reasonable moment to come around and get back to work, but by then it was too late to stop the rear door from being opened. And Sully specifically aimed the landing so that they'd be in the middle of the waterways, and close to boats, as he was trained to do. If you were a pilot, I feel like you'd know all of this. There was no checklist, no training for what to do when both engines failed at such low altitude, no simulator training for ditching in any simulator he'd trained in. The crew did the best they could with the time they had, and saved everyone. Can't ask for much more than that.
@johanna26904 жыл бұрын
@@brch2 I agree with almost all your points. But I think they simply aimed for an area on the Hudson that was empty. They were lucky that it was empty when going down and they were lucky that the ferries were still nearby.

Those other flight attendants are real people with real feelings and they UNDERSTAND her, as does Captain Sully. Just look at the fond way he looked at her when she started talking. They know that she showed TRUE grit, caring only about getting the passengers out when the water was up to her neck and she herself was badly injured. You would probably have pissed yourself in fear at impact, let alone later in such a situation. Just do us all a favour and go troll somewhere else.

None of the other passengers in the rear of the plane suffered any injuries from the water landing - Doreen Welsh was injured not by the ditching, but by trying to close one of the two Rear Emergency Escape Doors - that Should Never have been opened in the first place! As a Trained Flight Attendant Doreen Welsh is supposed to be Fully Knowledgeable about the Importance of Never Opening either one of the two Rear Emergency Escape Doors after a water landing! And because she was the Flight Attendant that was seated in the rear of the passenger cabin - it was Her Responsibility to Guard the Rear Emergency Escape Doors and to Audibly Warn the passengers Not to open either one of the two Rear Emergency Escape Doors as doing so will Flood the passenger cabin with water! Doreen Welsh Totally Failed to Perform her Duties as Trained! Even worse - Once either one of the two Rear Emergency Escape Doors is opened after a water landing - the Force of the water rushing into the passenger cabin makes it IMPOSSIBLE to push the door back into its opening! - Doreen SHOULD have been Well Aware of this - and she would never have injured herself if she did what she was Trained to Do and Prevented either of the two rear Emergency Escape Doors from being opened! This Vital Life-Saving Information is in Plain View for Every Passenger to see - on the Emergency Procedures Cards that are in the Seat Back Pockets (or the Side Pockets of the Front Seats) on every Airliner. During the Pre-Flight Briefing - the Head Flight Attendant holds up one of these Emergency Procedures Cards - and directs all of the passengers to locate these cards where I just mentioned - and to Read the Cards! Every passenger who takes a few moments to Read the Crucial Life-Saving Information on the Emergency Procedures Card will see the locations of all the Emergency Escape Doors - and the Very Clear Warning to NOT OPEN either one of the two Rear Emergency Escape Doors after a Water Landing! This is because the Tail Section (the rear of the passenger cabin) of all Airliners will quickly settle deeply into the water - putting the two Rear Emergency Escape Doors below the waterline (under water) - and opening either one of these Rear Emergency Escape Doors after a water landing will allow a LOT of water to quickly rush into the passenger cabin - which will not only make the situation Far Worse than it has to be for the passengers - but it will make the aircraft Sink Much Faster than it normally would after a Water Landing (Ditching), if the Rear Emergency Escape Doors are Not Opened after a Ditching.
