I had Sulcattas in SC and the two large girls laid up to 3 times starting in late December through first of March. I had heated hides, (More like Tiny Homes with fences!) I would open the doors in the morning, and check all day for a dig. Several times I would be out after dark collecting eggs. My hatch rate was %95 to 98% so all went well. I sure remember having to babysit a pacing tortoise with a load of eggs!!

@@GardenStateTortoise From the 2 females (And 3 lusty males!) I produced 150 to 200 hatchlings a year, that Alan Bosch sold. He paid me all of $30.00 for each baby. Fast forward to here and now, and I have a single monster female that I bought as a hatchling for $4000.00 Mexican Pesos, or $270.00 USD! I also had to buy Young Redfoots for $350.00 USD each and manged to pick all three Girls, so no babies for me. :(!

Maybe adding a layer of soil on top of the gravel in the nesting area, would help !? Soil from the area ouside where they usually lay their eggs, or similar soil, as you mentioned soil consistency as a criteria they search for ! 🤔

How wide and long is Otis‘s enclosure? I have Indian stars that cannot be outside in the winter and need to make an indoor enclosure. They’re only a year and a half. I have them in a 3 x 2 right now but as they get bigger. I I want be prepared because I know they’ll need a bigger indoor enclosure.

The nesting area in their indoor setup doesn’t seem deep enough. Couldn’t the sides of their enclosure be made higher at that end and more substrate added to give that depth she’s looking for? An enclosure could even be designed along the lines of a stake bed for trucks. The standing enclosure could have sockets that fences attached to stakes would fit into. That would give the security of keeping the tortoise in while raising the depth of the nesting area.

The nesting area is plenty deep enough because as we stated, the other tortoise nested no problem. The issue is that she is not finding the area. It’s an issue with being inside so any indoor enclosure would pose a problem for her. Some tortoises adapt just fine to their enclosures once moved inside while some just can’t seem to get comfortable or at least take much longer.
