That is a nice pipe. The flaw improved it. Thanks for the video. I Hope to acquire one of your pipes soon. Those volcanoes look great.

great craftsmanship. When you add decorative material, do you worry about one material being harder than the other and sanding unevenly?
@jalanpipes4 жыл бұрын
Great question! Yes, that is definitely a concern. So it takes a little experience to get it right and learn which materials are suitable. In this case, Ivorite is perfect. Another issue is polishing, and it’s more pronounced than sanding. If this is a problem, sand to a super high grit before polishing very lightly.

Jeff, I love your'e videos! Thanks so much for sharing your knowledge here on youtube. Can you please share what company it is that you had make your stamp that you mark your pipes with? Thanks Jeff, keep the great content coming!!

Hmm, I’d have to do some digging. It’s a company in Ohio, if I remember correctly...but it’s been a few years

@@jalanpipes Was it by any chance Buckeye Engraving? I've looked at a number of online sources and they are in OH.

Hey Jeff! I'll be finishing my very first pipe tomorrow when I get my hands on some shellac for it. Next up is the mouthpiece, and I wanted to ask you: do you think regular black acrylic would do well as a mouthpiece material? All these other materials I've seen used such as vulcanite or those fancy acrylic acetate rods are hard to come by in my country, so I figured I'd try with regular acrylic. Great video, by the way! Really related to it hahahaha
@jalanpipes4 жыл бұрын
Congrats to you on putting in the hard work to make your own pipe. Yes, I think normal acrylic will work, but I suppose it depends what type of acrylic it is. Worst case is that you make a mouthpiece and it doesn’t work out. Best case is that it’s just fine. In either case, the journey should be worth taking

Hi J. Alan, I´m a big fan of your KZbin Channel and I just saw you video “Making a Handcut Pipe Mouthpiece“ but I still wonder how to make a bend Mouthpiece for an Sherlock Holmes pipe. Sincerely, Walter Mitty
@jalanpipes3 жыл бұрын
Bending a mouthpiece is accomplished with heat.

@@chroniclesofapipemaker5175 ah, missed your question. Sorry, have been going through lots of old comments I missed. For the smooth pipes, I’d recommend a Danish Oil. There are lots of formulas, so try a few out until you find one that renders the results you like.

I really enjoy your videos. I am interested in purchasing a lathe. What do you recommend? Should I have wood Lathe only or metal lathe or both?
@jalanpipes3 жыл бұрын
Both can be successfully used. Metal lathes are ideal if you intend to make your own mouthpieces from rod stock.
@londoncallingwithsimon68174 жыл бұрын
Nicely done. I’m interested in the pin you used to mount the pipe on the lathe, is it simply a tight fit that holds the pipe? Thanks
@jalanpipes4 жыл бұрын
Yes, it is a friction fit. If you buy a set of pin gauges you will have all you need for pipemaking.
@londoncallingwithsimon68174 жыл бұрын
@@jalanpipes thanks for you reply. No danger of the pipe flying off?
@jalanpipes4 жыл бұрын
There’s always that chance. But using a tight fit and working slowly mitigates the problem
