One of the worst #invasive #plants in the #Philadelphia area is Oriental Bittersweet. It’s a climbing, vigorous #vine that is capable of strangling and shading out #native plants and trees, frequently preventing natural #forest regeneration. It is very heavy and can cause tree failure in extreme cases. In this case, many vines were climbing up an endangered Green Ash tree. The tree is infected with the Emerald Ash Borer, but I hope that by removing this vine, we can increase its ability to produce seeds in its remaining time. Here’s how I took care of it before it got worse! I would recommend removing this plant from your property, especially if it’s climbing on native vegetation.

Most of our ash trees were killed by the ash borer. I miss our big ash trees. There are several little sprouts all of the place, but they can barely grow due to the deer. I hope they can eventually come back. 😊

You da man. Thanks for saving the ash tree. Invasive vines are super bad, I see them at my township parks and feel so bad for the dying trees

Don’t forget invasive honeysuckle to that list. Regardless, yeah, what a different world it would be if this was part of the public consciousness.

Hey! This is probably way too late, but you're going to want to apply herbicide directly to the freshly cut portions of the bittersweet, otherwise cutting the top off can encourage rapid root suckering. It's definitely not dead, just severely pruned 😅 But otherwise this is amazing! So happy to see someone paying attention and caring for the land! 😊 Keep it up! I'm hitting like and subscribe.

Can you recommend a safe herbicide? So far everything I've looked into should be illegal.

I concur with you, with invasive, species removal, It’s so important to use the pesticides, even those of us who normally would never pick up the things! I have definitely cut down some invasive shrubs before, and I have to tap the trunks with pesticides or they will grow back.

I did the same over here in south Jersey. We had two ash trees covered by english ivy and bittersweet. I did this last Winter and this spring and summer the ash trees looked amazing. I'll go back and kill anymore vines I see, but I'm hoping that these 2 ash trees will some propagate many many more.

Large forested parks within major US cities are the final stronghold of Ash trees. Due to being surrounded building high density, NOT in suburbs, I have observed a trend of these forested pockets have minimal invasive species of insects, fungi, and bacteria alike. I have observed Ash trees, American Elm, and American Chestnut still able to grow and produce seeds in viable numbers. The chestnuts are still very uncommon though. I have about 200-300 green ash seeds currently in stratification from last autumn.

Any time I see those awful vines being lopped makes my day, most homeowners have no idea how bad they are and just leave them to wreak havoc on their landscapes. I also agree with the previous post, just painting a little undiluted glyphosate on the cut will go directly to the roots and kill them too... although best not done in the spring when the vine is pushing out to make new growth.

They look used already. Or maybe he got a new pair, or he enjoys what he's doing so he bought them for this video? Regardless, who cares? How else are you supposed to own things, should they only be ever "already owned"? You got a car when you started driving, right? Should we all laugh at you and say "wow you bought that car JUST to drive?" No, because that would be stupid, just like your comment
