The number of hedgehogs is declining at head-spinning speed in France, we do need to help our little friends! Fun fact, if you start doing a few things for them, very little really, like leaving a hole in the fence for them to get inside your garden and leaving some untidied spots of grass and wild flowers along your hedge, they'll feel welcome and settle down organizing their own little home. If you're lucky and patient, you could see them having a good time around your lawn, which is just the cutest thing ever! 😊

If you want hedgehogs in your garden, let the weeds grow. I find that when I let my garden go wild, they come in 3-4 at a time and start feeding on the woodlice and other insects around the base of the weeds. Also letting your garden go wild helps bee and butterfly populations.

I totally agree... a lot of gardeners see dandelions as a weed... where in actual fact, humans can eat every single part of the dandelion plant, including the root... which can be dried out and used as a coffee substitute. Dandelions are very rich in many essential vitamins & minerals beneficial to humans... you can also make a dandelion jelly, Do some research people. Sorry, I got a little carried away there :) having seen one, then two hedgehogs in my garden ( wildlife sanctuary ) I'm doing all I can to help these shy little creatures from going extinct. My daughter in law told me they like cat food pellets and just plain water... but I think they were first attracted to my so called garden! :) by leaving crushed bird peanuts around my bird feeding stations. Wild bird peanuts are fine to feed hedgehogs, but doing some research, peanuts having a high fat content, reduces the lifespan of the hedgehog.. so... peanuts in moderation people, a treat as such.. :)

Watched this on Channel 5 when it was on. Caught one last night when I was outside, small hog but it certainly liked the cat crunchies I left out. Love these wee creatures and try to "hog hunt" every night, I usually get the "cat" though and end up with a mog rather than a hog. If I'm lucky, it's both..."hog and mog " night.

For the future: hedgehogs are largely insectivores: their diet is very high in protein, with some fats and little carbs. Most cat food (even wet food) is too high in fat for them and can be quite harmful if they eat it regularly.

I wish we had wild hedgehogs in the states. We have armadillos where I live and they're cool I guess but I heard they carry leprosy.

Put out shallow bowl of weak beer. It attracts and drowns the slugs and the hedgies get a drink with their dinner 😀

TIP no. 6: never feed them milk, they are lactose intolerant and can eventually die if they drink it.
@sonjalawson49254 жыл бұрын
You should never feed hedgehogs snails, slugs or earthworms as they can get lungworm which is often fatal.
@kimholland48224 жыл бұрын
That's the food they eat. How can it harm them
@dianestiner86022 жыл бұрын
You are right ! Hedgehogs are not really fond of snails nor slugs. Earthworms once in a while. The video says "mostly insects" and THAT is what they eat. Tragically insects are disappearing. Little portions of wet catfood is only to help them in automn when they have not gained enough weight to go thru hibernation.
@hashchief6642 жыл бұрын
@@kimholland4822 they are little scavengers, if it looks nice , feels nice and tastes nice, they will chew it down. But molluscs do carry lungworm which can be fatal to hedgehogs. Even arthropods, which make up a large portion of a hedgehogs natural diet can contain parasites, but it is less common.
