I remember that mission where you had to defend the town hall you had just captured. My defenses were quickly destroyed in my first playthrough that I had to regroup my remaining forces in the town center to have a last stand only to receive an order to fall back to the church where I had little to no defense erected.

the defence of carentan level can be cheesed to hell and back if you are willing to spend a day on just that level. if you build up a astranomical amount of mines you can cover that whole other side of the map (on the previous level, the game knows what units you had last time, mines included). but beware this legit takes like 12 hours of leaving the game runing due to how big that whole area is and the limited ammo zones you can cap. tho i am not sure if ai can see and thus avoid mines or if they just take a strait path to the 2 ammo points.

Think they just do the straight path, I remember when they reach certain points more AI just spawn out of nowhere. I only found that out when mines way away from the "front" went off as it's scripted that they'll spawn on the sides and even in the town at certain points

Most fun I had in CoH was on Carentan, just moving up to the far north of the map where all the enemies spawn, camping it to hell and back, mowing down as many enemies that showed up as I could, and only retreating when I was getting overwhelmed. Oh, and yes, I remember they can see your camouflaged snipers on at least that map because their motorcycles home in on their position like a freaking missile.

You can cheese the first defensive mission by using the previous mission to go around and mine the bridges and all the approaches, as well as capture and secure the points beyond the bridges.

One thing I see mentioned a lot about the Beaches of Normandy that most movies/media get wrong is Normandy beaches were pretty long. You didn't get out of a boat and have a machine gun nest right in front of you. Everyone knew to spread out to divert the ability of the machine gunners to halt their advances. And the bunkers the Nazis built at Normandy are pretty humble compared to the usual giant concrete structures you see them fortified in for dramatic purposes. The more realistic D-Day would be the allies advancing relatively unopposed while the Germans run around like madmen trying to cobble together any kind of defense. Also Canadians on D-Day cleared their objective at Juno and advanced so much they had to wait for everyone else to catch up.
