The lessons learned here will be most useful to heritage groups in NSW when the time comes to retire and preserve the XPTs in the next few years (hopefully)!

I feel there should be an attempt to preserve the same number of class 43 HSTs to the number of TOCs that used them and paint them in the respective liveries (ie one in GNER, one in GWR, one in East Coast etc)

agreed! I would LOVE if they could get their hands on the LNER Let's Go Around Again HST, which to my knowledge is still in storage. And the good news is, there is no need to fit retention tanks if it is registered as a heritage vehicle, and volunteers are maintaining it.

I think there should be 1 entire set per TOC livery ( 2 power cars and 9/8/7 coaches)

I remember my last trip with my son on a 125 in 2019 we knew they would be in museums soon. We even got to go on the 43002 out of Paddington.

Unless things have changed they have 5 power cars not 4. 43 071, 073, and 082 were launched and run on the Colne Valley Railway on the 16th April 2022.

Those belong to 125 Preservation. 125 Group own 43044, 43048, 43089, and 43159, along with the various MK3 trailers and LHCS

The 125 group have a Paxman Valenta & their aim is to fit it to 43044. However, they need to do some serious restoration work on it before this happens & future generations can experience the iconic sound.

yes, 43044 will have its current VP185 engine replace with an original RP200L Valenta

@@MarkIVWarrior yup, plenty of HSTs ran with different engined power cars on either end between 2007 and 2010 when the MTU 16V4000s were being installed, there was a brief period on the GWML where all 3 of the engine types were being used, i remember it. VP185, RP200, and 16V4000 power cars are all completly compatible with each other
