I’ve been using the white plastic tube that slips over the trunk of the tree to protect my trunks. Would that work in the same manner?
@EdgeofNowhereFarm
@EdgeofNowhereFarm 2 жыл бұрын
Yes, we have the plastic guards on several of our trees too! They start to open as the trunk of the tree grows but at that point the canopy of the tree should shade it. One thing we do have to check for is sucker growth that is covered by the guard.

Will this help for a trunk damaged by deer chew? I live in NW Montana.
@EdgeofNowhereFarm
@EdgeofNowhereFarm 11 ай бұрын
Hmm, that's a good question. I know it would help the damage on the trunk, but I'm not sure it would stop those deer from coming back for a snack! As long as the trunk is not girdled at least.

I only have 6 tiny citrus trees. Their trunks are only 1/2" diameter. There is no way I can use all of the can at once. Can the leftover product be stored for next year?
@EdgeofNowhereFarm
@EdgeofNowhereFarm 2 жыл бұрын
Great question! You could mix only what you need to paint your trees. Or yes, there is directions on the can for storage in the freezer. Just know when you use it again you will want to give it plenty of time to thaw out and will need to mix it very well.

I, too, have some smaller trees (citrus and avocado) and cannot use the entire mixed can, but in my experience, the IV Organics will keep if you ensure the lid is secured. Much like typical paint, the solids will settle, but with a little stirring, you are good to go months later. YMMV

I’ve used IV organically paint, and it is pricy. This year I’m using the Arizona’s best tree trunk paint with Surround WP mixed into the paint. We’ll see how it goes.
@EdgeofNowhereFarm
@EdgeofNowhereFarm 2 жыл бұрын
It definitely is a bit more expensive. I like the idea of adding something to that basic paint to help deter pests. That was the main difference we saw with this vs the AZ's Best paint. So far it's keeping those rabbits away from the trunks!

@EdgeofNowhereFarm
@EdgeofNowhereFarm 2 жыл бұрын
Now that is an interesting question. In my mind it's around the 5 year mark as most fruit producing trees are hitting their stride by then. That being said, pecans are a long haul. Most estimates are at least 7 years for your first real harvest.

I see Lori is hard at work. Moving at that speed it must have taken a whole 15 minutes to paint all the trees :) Yeah, mine are mostly protected. We had the plastic tree guards only because there's no rabbit pressure here. Rabbits, yes! But, they like Indian rush pea leaves better than tree trunks or green bean leaves. Good news, the Stella cherry is showing some green. The Capulin is, I hope, self-fertile. They will not cross with European cherries. Blossoms are coming on in long strings; they're a rum/wild black cherry but from Mexico. I think the big kitty is back. There's water left out for birds and bees near an old fountain in the front of the house. about 9 tonight, Termite the (garden) Terminator is laying under an open window when he starts to snarl. mind, he's a very quiet dog, the breed is quiet. then this low, biting growl comes from outside. Not canine, but too low to be the bobcat. I got up, turned on the light, and looked. No nada. Later, after going out, Termite came in so fast he took a tumble running around a corner in the house to dive under the bed. Whatever it is, if it keeps him out of the garden it can't be all bad. hasta, chicos!

Ooh, now that does sounds a little mountain lion(ish). I know we have them in the wash a few hundred yards from the farm, so we take that into account where we can with the animal enclosures. @EdgeofNowhereFarm
@EdgeofNowhereFarm 2 жыл бұрын
Hey Jama. We don't worry about the ants with our fruit trees. The only fruit they tend to be a real problem with are figs with open eyes. For those we have used tree tanglefoot applied to some flagging tape stretched around the trunk. That does the trick to keep them from getting up to the fruit.

Hi Jama, Very encouraging to see an aspiring farmer from Somaliland. I'm impressed. BTW, I'm also a Lander farmer. As for the ants if you still have the problem, try to use apple cider vinegar. Mix equal parts of vinegar and water, and spray along ant pathways. Regular application is necessary especially after it rains. Mohamed Ali, Hargeisa.

I have a Million View video idea. Take a PH availability chart & flip it vertically where the high-Ph is at the bottom of the page. I got banned from a few Giant pumpkin growers for asking how deep their soil was, lol. Upon further research of my soil using the UCDavis SoilWeb I've discovered my first 5.5 native-inches of soil should be a 5.3-Ph, with a 4.8-ph at 14-inches deep, with a water-table at 15. So the reason some of my young-citrus were having iron-deficiencies is b/c the roots couldn't grow deeper than what my 8.1 mulch was locking out. When I flip a PH availability chart I can almost use the Ph scale as inches of soil-horizon.
@EdgeofNowhereFarm
@EdgeofNowhereFarm 2 жыл бұрын
You lost me at PH availability chart with this one! It would be interesting to check our soil PH again in a couple of years to see what the heavy wood chip mulch and manure based fertilizing has done to our PH.

Hunting by dog has been outlawed in a lot of states since the 1920’s depending on animal; what you are advocating is causing the varmint animals minutes or more of agonizing dread and pain until dispatched by dog vs an instant. I’ve owned my share of jacks, you need to feed, pay vet bills and home them and train them if they don’t have a strong instinct. I’d rather not inflict terror but a quick dispatch.
