When sheets became thin in the middle they were cut in half and sides sewn to middles. Instead of buying ready made pillow cases and extra flat sheet was bought and pillows made from it for less cost. People did not use paper plates, napkins or towels, they always used cloth and washed and reused. Children's clothes were made from worn adult clothes, then passed on to other children as they became too small. Old clothes and shoes were used when doing dirty jobs such as gardening instead of wearing good clothes. Shoes were repaired. Broken clay pots were broken into small pieces and put in the bottom of plant pots to help with drainage. Used string was saved in a string bag and reused, Brown paper was saved and reused. Old newspapers were saved to light fires. Wood and sticks were gathered on walks, the process was called, 'going woodin' '. A hotwater bottle was used on cold nights to warm one's bed, as were flannel sheets and night gowns. When it was very cold, a mug of hot chocolate along with a bowl of oatmeal kept one warm on the inside. Eider downs were used on beds, and an extra woolen blanket under the bottom sheet kept one warmer. People did not eat meat daily. When they did eat it it was more more as a condiment to add flavour. All meals were stretched by using potatoes, bread, rice or noodles. Left-overs were always used at the next meal, hearty soups were common. Warm boots were worn in winter.

The baking soda & vinegar trick has never worked on a clog for me. However, I do use it occasionally to clean the garbage disposal.

Who are you trying to fool? Grandma didn't have a microwave! Lol I actually had to show my MOM how they worked when they first came out. AND Grandma didn't use a calendar as wrapping paper. She pains takingly cut each piece of tape so that she could re use her wrapping paper. It drove us crazy to watch her open her gifts!

My grandma used an aluminum pie pan making a hole on the lip to put a string through, tied it to a stake in the ground and left the wind flip it around scaring birds away

Sounds as though these tips were gathered by a young person who lacked knowledge. Most young people have on a very unrefined concept when it comes to frugality. If that were not true, the horrific amounts of food wasted in the US and other countries would not happen. When I was a child, the idea of wasting anything was considered criminal. Jam jars were saved and reused year after year. As a family we went on bicycle rides to pick blackberries, which were used for pies, puddings and jam. Ashes from the fire were put on the garden, and almost everyone kept backyard chickens. They ate our veggies scraps. My parents grew more than enough food in the garden to feed our familiy of four and share with friends and neighbours. We always ate fresh salads that went from garden to table in minutes, long before the term 'organic' was termed. We had raspberries, apple and pear trees, as well as an often used herb garden under the kitchen window. Clothes were dried on the clotheline, darning socks was done in front of the fire at night, when clothes were mended before being ironed, aired and put away. My father repaired our cars, did carpentry and bricklaying as needed, as well as making furniture. Tweed for making suits and winter coats came from a mill in the north of England managed by a Great-Aunt who saved remnants for my mother. " Nothing like a good bit of stuff," as the women of the family used to say. They were all skilled homemakers, and could repair electrical items. Tradesmen were never hired to do jobs my parents could safely do themselves. Knitted items were unravelled when worn out and knitted into new sweaters. Instead of TV we went for walks, read books, played the piano, and had many hobbies. Walking and training the dog was a favourite. Instead of eating out, we had family picnics, and always took a packed lunch. We never ate between meals. Shopping was not a recreational activity. Educating oneself by studing and learning new skills was the norm. Even though people had little, by comparison to now, we were always neat, clean and well educated, good manners were valued as was frugality.' Waste not, want not , ' was one of many mottos that guided our lives.
