▶️Introduction
Primary clarifiers are used to complete the process of sedimentation. Sedimentation is the process of separating suspended solids from a liquid. Separation without mechanical means can be completed within a sedimentation basin or settling tank, separation using mechanical means is completed using a clarifier.
Clarifiers are used in many water treatment facilities, as well as in the mining, paper and pulp, and sanitation industries. Clarifiers can be of the rectangular, sloped or circular design.
The purpose of the clarifier is to reduce the velocity of the influent in order to allow the suspended solids to separate from the liquid. Heavy solids are referred to as settleable solids and these accumulate on the bottom of the clarifier to form sludge. Lighter solids are referred to as floatable solids and these accumulate on the liquid surface to form scum.
Clarifiers have found widespread application because they are very effective and offer a good return on investment compared to other alternatives. A typical primary clarifier will separate between 90-95% of settleable solids from the liquid and 40-60% of suspended solids.
How It Works
Influent enters through the central pipe and is discharged to the centre of the clarifier. The influent velocity is reduced and settling occurs due to gravity. Heavier solids form sludge and are removed using rakes/ploughs. Lighter solids float on the top of the liquid and are removed by a scum skimmer. The cleaned liquid passes through a weir and into the effluent launder. The effluent is then extracted for direct discharge or further treatment.

Excellent tutorial! I drifted in to your channel watching other videos (which are great too), but figured I’d watch this one to see you explanation of a topic that I was already very familiar with-given that I work in municipal wastewater treatment. It’s nice to have my understanding confirmed, since I am neither a plant operator or a process engineer. One little tidbit of no real importance, but a fair degree of hilarity, is the name for the ramp that the scraper blade rides over just before the scum trough is the “scum beach!” I’ve always thought that’d be a good name for a punk rock album.

Kudos, best presentation I am yet to see for a primary clarifier ! Subscribed! 👍 PS. It is _"Retention time"_ as opposed to detention! in this case. Retention is the time of *_"passing"_* material / liquid through a given volume [Rt=V/Q], detention is more for batch processes, whereby a fixed volume of material / liquid is *_"detained"_* for a fixed period of time.

Every Nation city on ocean fronts should have ocean water treatment plants for human consumption as well as hydro energy and waste water of those places treatments before being immersed into oceans back, it has manyfold uses, not only huge amount of new work arena but it restructures the most important factor of society, instead of dumbass spendings on arms arsenal military waging useless wars with each other, monies should be spend on these new restructuring of social civil matters, military engineers, labor can be used along with civil ones, it's matter of strange truth that apart from USA nobody else as such attacks other nation unless attacked first in modern times especially middle east as of now, or earlier times, EU has sworn off after world war two, UK or Canada or Australia or any other, except Russia now so why USA all the times?, who is messing with their heads and systems with paranoia of ' world is their enemy" and instigates wars with others not even their issues, something not right here for long time it seems
