Excellent stuff! I assisted (held tools) with the overhaul of a C130 (Hercules) prop when I was small, and never fully internalized the mechanism despite having seen it in bits. It shares a similar concept.

I have the same exact question; As in constant speed variable pitch aircraft propellers. The one article I read states the fluid comes from inside the crankshaft, but there’s got to be a pump and a sump somewhere.

Good animation of the actuation, but the one thing I can't seem to find an understanding for is, how you connect hydraulic pressure lines from outside the prop shaft into the spinning interior and on two concentric levels.

How does the hydraulic fluid get into the shaft? Isn't the shaft really long? Is it pumped in a hundred feet away at the engine?
@savree-3d2 жыл бұрын
Will plan a video for this.

Very nice video. But I didn't understand how the fluid control is done, there should be some valve to stop it flowing in both chambers, forward (yoke moving to left in the cross section you showed) and right (yoke moving to right). How is it done? How is a desired pitch maintained?

In forward motion, which pitch is the most efficient? Shallow pitch or a greater angle of attack? I hear conflicting answers from others.
@abnormaalz Жыл бұрын
The propeller blade is optimized for a certain Angle of Attack. This is the angle between the direction of the water flowing into the leading edge of the blade and the chord line (google angle of attack for a better explanation). The optimal AoA depends on the shape of the blade. The actual AoA depends on the speed of the ship moving through the water, the rotational speed of the shaft, and, of course, the pitch of the propeller blades. There is no single optimal pitch setting that can be used at all times, but there is a single optimal AoA.
