Saw was always an extreme and violent person even before his sister's death. On the surface ppl attribute this to ego and so dismissed it. It was just that her optimism and relationship kept that in check. When she died not only was that check gone, but saw blamed himself. And then the Republic became the empire: a more violent and extreme empire. And this just gave his violent tendencies to come to the surface. he was a true warrior and I dont know what he would actually do in peace time

Just because the enemy is the bad guys doesn't make you the good guys. In hunting monsters, one must take care not to become monsters. Saw and his Partisans are interesting because they show that not all people opposing the Empire are good. I'd also like to see some sympathetic Imperial officers who serve the Empire with good intentions, not fully processing they are propping up a tyrannical regime, or perhaps naively believing they can fix it from the inside.

I think it was wasted potential in the use of Onderon both in Clone Wars and later that they used the planet but ignored great parts of its legends history. It would have been a funny Easter Egg if the resistance against the Separatists had been in some parts people who followed a Naddistic ideology they only half understand (after the Sith lord which line ruled the planet for so long), and the Jedi would have to cooperate with people who in a certain way look back to a imaginary golden age under Sith-rule...

Saw Gerrera's Bin-Laden arc is one of the coolest ideas to come from the new canon IMO. His introduction in TCW set up the Mujahedeen parallels early on. - Jedi (CIA) sending in advisors to help train the resistance fighters - Insurgents using the mountains as a hideout - The Republic (US) illegally smuggling in rocket launchers to help the insurgents take down Sepratist gunships (Soviet Hinds) I'm really glad that Rogue One and Rebels showed us the continuation of that story with Saw becoming increasingly radicalized and violent.

In fairness to the Alliance, Mon Mothma was right: they were never going to beat the Empire using assassinations and bombs, at least against anyone other than the Emperor, who they would never get close to. The Alliance needed to break the Empire's doctrine of fear, showing the Imperial soldiers that defecting in the face of atrocities wasn't a death sentence, which would eventually force Vader and Palpatine to go to the places the Alliance might eventually be able to kill them, or even spark an outright coup.

The broader Alliance being a rather sanitized organization is a good choice for the rebels because it gives a moderate and appealing vision for others to rally to and behind, "Restore the Republic" is straight forward, you know what the objective looks like, and all the hard work of what will or will not work for government when the Empire is destroyed has already been done by thousands of years of Republican history. However, not every rebel opposing the Empire will be on board with that, but rather have a vendetta against the Empire, or might be in favor of that objective but will use methods outside the standard Alliance affairs. It's a very convenient set up the Rebellion has. Some members are moderate and appealing, they can get things done diplomatically, other members or fringe groups can be more ruthless and messy, it's a good way to destabilize Imperial strategy, you can have both and if the more unhinged members go off the rails you can denounce them publicly but stay out of their way, win-win.

@@logion567 However, we're seeing that this kind of loose organization can become problematic after the resistance becomes the ruling government. Such is the case right now with the Taliban in the newly reestablished Emirate of Afghanistan. The emir of Kabul and his council have promised amnesty and a more moderate form of rule without corruption, mostly in order to attract foreign investment from Western, Slavic, and East Asian nations, but many of their troops loosely interpreted it or outright ignored it and went on revenge-killing sprees and implemented strict versions of Sharia in conquered districts. Not to mention they have ISIS-K to contend with and are trying to appease an ever-hungry and expansionist China who would love nothing more than to control Afghan's abundant mineral wealth entirely. And add to that many pro-republican troops, leaders, and civilians fled and regrouped in the Russian-backed and influenced Central Asian Republics like Uzbekistan and Tajikistan and are most likely plotting their own return to power. The Taliban won the war, but it remains to be seen if they can keep the peace.

The rebel alliance is the most sanitized resistance faction we’ve seen. I’d love to see a clash between two morally dark groups with the empire and something like the partisans. Something where the lines of good and evil aren’t so easily drawn.

Well there are hints that the Rebel Alliance did alot of rather questionable action behind the curtain. The Rebels had members commiting assassination and sabotage against non military targets and civilian victims seems to be rather common but later is just my assumption looking at their attacks on facilities like on Kuat. Cassian Andor is an example of an Rebel Agent that had done some assassinations.

Rather then the Alliance outright, it would probably be pirates who are loosely affiliated with the Alliance, which we kind of got in Rebels, but still to a sanitized extent. It did lead to a fun Table Top RPG though, where Mon Mothma got 'disappeared' by the Alliance Black Ops, who basically took over when the plans for the Death Star were destroyed. Mon Mothma didn't like using an old Sith super weapon to win, so off she went.

@@18Krieger I think the main part of it is motive and intent. Kuat shipyards were a blatant military Target not a civilian installation. The fact that there may have been civilian casualties doesn't mean that civilians were ever a intentional target. The empire used civilian slave labor in their factories like on lothal for their walkers and other weaponry and likely lothal wasn't an anomaly in that regard. It wouldn't be above the empire to put civilian labor on certain military bases as human shields so they could claim the rebels killed non military Target individuals. I mean consider the pr spin that came out after the rebels destroyed the death star from the empire. There's a distinct possibility that there were more prisoners in the detention area when the death star was destroyed but unfortunately some things like that might happen not intentionally but as a sad reality

Separatist holdouts continued after the Clone Wars and it took the Empire several years to clean them up if that counts (and even the in Canon there were at least two Neo Separatist movements to emerge after Endor so the Empire learned that while they can kill the corps and the droids they can't kill the ideology)

I never liked saw gerra’s methods because that brings more people to the empire. Their tactics tend to harm civilians the people they are supposed to protect which in turn drastically lowers their support

You know I love getting these reports of the various places the institute investigates but I am always concerned for the wellbeing of the personnel sent to these alternate realities. I think eventually we should get some video footage from the personnel in the field some time so that we can make sure that the appropriate precautions are taken to ensure the survivability our agents.

The Rebel equivalent of the Mujahadeen. No one in their right mind would support them. If Hunter had any sense, he'd have ordered Crosshair to open fire against them. The small amount of civilian casualties caused by fighting them would be offset by all the civilians who would still be alive if it weren't for Saw's Partisans attacking in civilian areas.

The professors and the commie europeans promoted it as American counter culture and elsewhere as part of the narrative of someone standing against the negative aspects of the US as perceived by the local governments.
