That is why many of the old saw makers and plane makers used Apple for handles and totes. I love Apple for carving. It is butter smooth with sharp tools.

The wood from fruit trees (such as apples and pears) was used to make up-market Tea Caddies here in England. The caddies would be made by turning, often in the shape fruit itself. Apple wood is a lovely thing.

Just started cutting into some apple limbs on my upright 14" bandsaw. These smaller ones are too thin to have particularly dramatic heartwood, but they're still interesting. Can't wait to see how the thicker pieces look like on the inside.

Our filler used to save in a can the metal that we sawyers cut through. Although it did not take long, maybe 10 to 15 minutes to change a blade. Those wasted minutes add up. Then the filer had to spend a hour or so setting the teeth, sharpening and tuning the blade again before the blade could go into the ready rack. Each side of our mill tried to have roughly 6 to 8 blades sharp and ready to go all the time. One of the reasons for both sides having different blades was that the left or right side saws had a different tuning needed.

Apple is amazing on the lathe Nathan. Beautiful lumber for sure! I used to know a guy who used a walking metal detector for his raw turning stock to help detect as it goes very deep. His other main hobby was relic hunting. You can get them far cheaper than a commercial detector.

Nathan - I would expect that now that you have removed the damaging metal, that some of the larger slabs could be lightly planed to remove some of that washboard effect from the blade damage from the nails. Still has some pretty figures in the wood.

Beautiful wood Nathan! I guess you could call it many blade wood. I remember sharpening a hand plane and spending a good deal of time in the process. The very next piece of wood had a tiny cut nail, being an old period piece of wood. Well there went my razor sharp blade that made one pass. I have a regular metal detector I've used many times in the field. I've also used it many time in my shop. I've dug things in the ground 8-10" and it has picked up nails in wood 4-6" no problem. It is a Fisher detector and originally it was $750. It certainly paid for itself in coins and artifacts found over the years. But as said, I never had trouble picking up metal in boards. I always use my detector when running old boards through my planer. You might want to check out the companies like Fisher, Garret, etc. These people have a lays been great to deal with and may be able to help you out for far less money than that $2500. Thanks Kindly! DaveyJO in Pa.

If there is a shop around that sells metal detectors for "treasure hunters" you might talk to them. I suspect you might be able to get one of the less gadget filled ones for under $1000, perhaps $600 or so. You can get a loop to detect things and a smaller head a bit bigger than your thumb to localize the detection. I haven't looked at them for years, but it is something to keep your eyes out for to check up on--it might or it might not help. Your time is as valuable as those blades!

I winced when I saw that blade. It might be my current box of blades, (not naming) but they were good out of the box, but better after I sharpened and set them. I admit to hitting a stop once (only once) and I keep that blade for suspect logs. Those missing teeth turned into rakers and funny enough I love that blade. I will never see an apple that large here in FL. That was some lovely wood though and even after all the work, I am glad your customer will have something lovely and memorable. Also glad he decided to chunk up the limbs. A lot of people won’t and I think they are wasteful.
