Sawani Shende is a Hindustani Classical Artist born in a musically rich family. She was introduced to Indian Classical Music at a tender age of only six by her grandmother, Smt.Kusum Shende, a noted singer of the Kirana Gharana and an honoured artist of the Sangeet Natak Era. Sawani’s father, Dr.Sanjeev Shende, a disciple of Smt.Shobha Gurtu, has groomed her in semi classical genres like Thumri, Dadra, Kajri, etc. Quest for more and more knowledge in music brought Sawani to learn more music under the expert guidance of Dr. Smt.Veena Sahasrabuddhe, a noted classical vocalist from Gwalior Gharana. Sawani’s music is a beautiful soul searching combination of the Kirana and the Gwalior Gharana, where she mesmerizes audiences with enchanting melody and strength of both. Her confidence and mastery in Khayals, her crystal clear diction and overall sensitivity in presentation takes every performance to a very high aesthetic level.
Raag Maru Bihag is a very serene and a much loved raag. It is said to be of fairly recent vintage. An older raag, raag Maru is believed to be its precursor. But presently, Raag Maru Bihag is broadly acknowledged to be a contrivance of Atrauli-Jaipur founder Alladiya Khan‘s phenomenally insightful mind. The original MaruBihag composition, "Rasiya Ho Na Ja", has travelled far and wide, and is sung in various textual interpolations. Over the years, in the course of its journey across different regions, the raag has acquired peculiar touches and flavours reflecting the idiosyncrasies of some of the ingenious minds.
Raag Maru Bihag’s core being is beholden to Kalyan and supporting material is supplied by Bihag. The teevra madhyam tilts the development assuredly towards Kalyan and the elemental arrangement derives from Bihag. The two parts are mediated by special melodic gestures. This skillfully sophisticated interplay of the two diapasons is the characteristic flavour of Raag Maru Bihag.
Raag Maru Bihag is entrenched in popular Indian imagination via the legendary Indian playback singer Mohammad Rafi & Lata Mangeshkar's song ("Tum to Pyaar ho, Muje Tumse pyaara aur na koi") from V.Shantaram's 1963 released "Sehra", composed by Shri Ramlal ji.
