Just ordered a log burner so now I’m looking at how to save money on wood. I also have an almost unlimited supply of sawdust and paper so this video was just what I was looking for. Wish I had started collecting materials a long time ago now

It has been a couple of years since I was doing briquettes. The main reasons for me stopping were a lack of available sawdust to "get rid of" and excess ash compared to logs! Back when I was doing it I settled on a combination of Papier-mâché and wood shavings/ sawdust. The reason I am posting here was that the best results were if I left the paper in water for a week or so before blending it! Initially it would smell a bit but once pressed it lost the smell and when dried out was completely odourless! I suspect there was little difference in overall heat output between the briquettes and an equal weight of wood ..... but they definitely liberated the heat quicker and produced a massive amount of ash! I do need to qualify that I am (was) using a grade A dual fuel burner so the pyrolisation of the wood produced gasses that were also burned. If you do not have an efficient burner you may well get different results, but for me if I burn from 6 -10 each evening it will need to be emptied of ash after the third burn. Also there is no smoke from eather wood or briquettes once the burner reaches temp. As a side note I am on the third stoking of my burner tonight (just gone 10) .... and all is cosy!

You know what you're doing 👍 Interesting about leaving it a week. I'm going to sep up two buckets and rather than a pull system. I'll be doing it as a push system. With the shaving spending weeks in the buckets. It'll be fun finding out

I noticed that paper that had gotten wet and then dried, burned far more vigorously than plain paper. I don't know why, but I'm sure that a chemist has an explanation for it.
@twcmaker2 жыл бұрын
I should think it's to do with the manufacture of the paper. It's super compressed to make paper. Once it's wet, the fibres are free to release the internal pressure and float around. And I think the briquette (once dried out) might have more air and so better combustion. What do you think? Jamie

Briquettes just a little homage to the algorithm for you but seriously thats a great video and interesting especially in these times I was lucky as i has a big Hazel tree cut down last year so have lots of lovely dry wood for my open fire As a side thought i have been doing lots of research into rocket stoves (as i want one in my workshop) as they are far more efficient than conventional fireplaces and i like the fact that these Briquettes are a standard and regular size so you could make the loading chute to a size to suit

Another great briquette vlog. Is the sequel going to be watching paint dry? 😁 The briquettes are great, I just wish that I had enough material to make them. Briquettes are certainly more sustainable than the oil I have to burn to warm our house although we do have a local supplier for seasoned hardwood logs briquettes would be a great alternative. Hope that this comment helps your algorithm! Keep the vlogs coming they are great.

@@twcmaker I have started making my own briquettes. Mainly from sawdust and wood shavings...with about 5-10% paper. I am not sure if this helps other people but I bought a good quality plaster paddle mixer and sharpened the edges with an angle grinder so that the paddle mixer acts like a blade and cuts through the mixture. I think having a mixture that is finer helps with compression of the briquettes.
