So, how do the stops stay in place? What keeps them from falling back down after you let go of the crank handle?

There is enough friction, gravity is not an issue.

@@robertross7001 I purchased one last year,. Was made in 2000,. Not very many hours on it. Still working some things out with it, but seems a really well made mill. I have had some difficulty w the log stops and cutting a good rectangular beam. So your solution is very interesting, thanks.
