Sounds like I definitely need a sawmill for when the in-laws come to visit.

I have an older black lab, Otis that sits in the kubota Rtv and watches me saw. I park it in the shade when it’s hot and in the sun when it’s cool.

A couple questions. How did you know it was pink before you saw it? Why did you saw it 4/4? What did you sell it for ($)? We have a lot of sycamore here in the Midwest; junk wood, poor firewood, warps bad as lumber; rots very quickly.
@HobbyHardwoodAlabama2 жыл бұрын
I observed that it was pink from the ambrosia flags on the ends of the log, and you are correct, sycamore warps badly when it dries. That’s one excellent reason to quartersaw it, and we already had several pallets of thicker sycamore, so I milled it to 4/4 because that’s what we needed in the pipeline. Thanks for watching!

Love it when chip gets involved. Got one that will be a chip wanna be. If I ever teach him to put it all back in the pile I will have it made. Thanks for the videos. Love them

Wow! When will you be selling this sycamore?
@HobbyHardwoodAlabama2 жыл бұрын
Since the video was filmed, we should be finishing in the kiln this week, so probably ready for sale in a few weeks.

We get them from everywhere, but mostly from professional loggers.

That wood is gorgeous 😍. You guys have always had the best lumber and have steered me right with suggestions. To bad your keeping it as live edge. That would be perfect for my next project. I gotta swing by some weekend see what you have in stock.

I sawed some up as edged lumber as well, I try to saw the logs into a variety of lumber configurations.

Nice video ! Does sicamore stay flat making a tngential cut?, to me they have always been twisted after seasoning what thickness do you recommend for the slabs? Thanks
@HobbyHardwoodAlabama2 жыл бұрын
Yes, the problem with sycamore is that when it is flat sawn it will have a tendency to twist, so I normally quarter saw it, both to keep it flat and to expose the tyloses or rays. However, I'm sawing these specifically for live edge charcuterie boards, so am forced to flatsaw them to get the live edge look and so cut them a little thick and plan on shortening them up. A good rule of thumb is that reducing a board's length in half will reduce its bow by four times. So I expect these to move during the drying but we will simply crosscut and flatten them in the processing steps.

By the way, I cut up a sycamore that was beautiful pink and red. The sad part was that after it dried, it lost most of it's color. But still, I really like working with that wood. Good stuff.
@HobbyHardwoodAlabama2 жыл бұрын
Yes, that happens, but there are techniques to maintain the color throughout the process. I may make a video of it.
