Milling your own lumber on the saw mill you built is the best feeling. I was amazed at just how heavy it is to handle fresh cut wood.Beautiful job on the mill.
@gregoryhalye89076 жыл бұрын
During the milling process, it is better for your productivity to roll the log 90 degrees at a time and performing your cuts. The stops at the side will help keep the log perpendicular so that your cut on the top will be 90 degrees to the previous cut. Once the top is suitably flat and you have a nice straight edge down the previously cut side, roll the log again to make your 3/4 flat, and then turn it 1 last time to make your true square cut lumber. You can also take your lumber that is cut to squared sides and gang cut them (multiple logs at once, as long as they all fit side by side through your cutter head) to make processing the smaller dimensional lumber faster and less time consuming. Also, after pushing your cutter head through, turn down the speed and let it sit there as you remove your cut boards. Then you only need to raise the blade just enough to clear the log as you pull it back to the start position rather than raising the blade all the way up and lowering it back down to where you want to be after you get back to the front.

your mill looks good. Home built? Suggest you put a gallon container on the top of it with a hose leading down to your blade. Have an adjustable drip feed so your blade has a constant flow of water.
@martinbyrne66435 жыл бұрын
Motorcycle wheels are the best for for homemade sawmills ‘ once there set up right they will last for ever and no tyre wear’ the steel band wheels with the rubber tires are troublesome ‘ the motor cycle tyre is naturally shaped or rounded to keep the band blade riding to the highest point’ just look how beautifully them wheels are running and not the slightest bit of vibration ‘ just look at the perfect smooth cut’ not only that u can pick them up for next to nothing’ where cast wheels will set u back many dollars or euros ‘ so if u are thinking of building a mill consider this ‘ also they have the large diameter which reduces band breakage’ eg less bending on the larger diameter wheel ‘ also gives you a larger cutting throat ‘ this guy knows what he is doing

Good job on the mill. I watched all of your videos. I'm in Canada and operate a WoodMizer. One feature that is a must, is the auto feed which pulls the tower along. You get a more even and smoother cut. Also, we found that leaving the cut wood stacked on top while making another cut, heats up the saw blade and causes binding, I also suspect wear on parts etc. And one last thing about safety. We have both broken blades and simply had them fly off. It is so dangerous to run any band saw without full shielding. Make sure No One is ever in front or beside your machine when its operating. A flying blade will slice through you or a by stander before you can even see it coming. I have watched many of your other videos and was as surprised as you were to see your crane mount snap. You are an amazing millwright. If I am not prying to far, may I inquire what type of job you do as a day job? I sure hope you are in a position where you are able to put all your talent to good use. Overall... Simply Amazing. I look forward to your next addition to your collection of wonderful videos. Thank you so much for sharing. Well done...!!!

Pretty goooood! No word of a lie that I find it more interesting to watch your home built sawmill saw logs than the modern high tech multi-million dollar sawmill I work at. Everyone suggests a water self drip feed for blade cooling/lubrication and I agree however if you cut in the winter where water can freeze you may want to consider an oil mist like chainsaw bar lube.
@DonnDIY6 жыл бұрын
I think the main satisfaction this homemade sawmill gives is the fact it shouldn't work as well as it does or not at all since the consumer mind set we're all programmed to tells us we have to buy either the lumber or a factory made sawmill to cut the lumber. I left the full cuts in the video just because I really love to watch how the blade goes through the log, the sawdust flies and the boards form. The blade lube system will come.
@leemer16 жыл бұрын
Have you considered a kiln drying system for when you need dry lumber right away or do you prefer air drying?

:) I will start building my mill this winter. Where i live there is a place with hundreds (probably thousands) sunken logs. And i want to bring some of them up and see what i can make of them. The downside is that there will be some sand in them and the blade won´t last long.
@DonnDIY6 жыл бұрын
Awesome! That sunken material is good one. Especially when it's oak or something similar. You can get some serious value out of them! ;)

Beautiful! Maybe a water tank mounted underneath with a windshield wiper washer pump to automatically spritz water on the band blade instead of doing it by hand. But then you would need to mount a battery too. Need another flatbed trailer to put the cut wood on.

Wow ! I've watched the whole build and it looks to be a complete success, it cuts very straight. I've used Wood Mizer mills before and yours is every bit the match for them. like others have said a water drip bottle would be nice and possibly a power feed system? The wood mizer I used had power feed and that made for very consistent cuts.

Amazing build, might I suggest an auto water drip made from a 5 gallon water jug, some tubing, and a small valve? Another item that would be cool is make a chute to catch the saw dust off the end and catch it in a 5 gallon bucket that way u can use the sawdust for mulch or any nuber of uses, I use mine to Flux the lead for casting fishing weights and the occasional bullet.

Seems like you could easily add a drip lubrication system-- a largish tank up high, some plastic tubing, and a pair of valves-- one is the on/off (1/4 turn) and the other would regulate the drip (put that one higher).

Put 2 cables on the front down low in front of rollers, put a boat crank so you can pull machine equally , pushing on one side up higher on the leg I think is actually putting to much Indirect pressure making your blade want to climb. Love your mill runs at a nice smooth speed . Gravity water drip is nice also.
@DonnDIY5 жыл бұрын
The carriage is really heavy and steady and when the blade is sharp and adjusted correctly there is no way it'll want to climb. In the short period of experience I've had with a band sawmill this is what I've learned anyway. :) At present moment the mill has gravity fed water drip system on it.
