The US are planning on changing the law and making this mandatory, and Saw Stop have said if this does happen they will give up the patent and allow all manufacturers use this technology for free, so looks like we will soon be seeing this on all table saws

I have been a joinery tutor for the property & objects students at the National Institute of Dramatic Art in Sydney. They had a Sawstop installed in their workshop. They also had a laser cutter which left carbon on the cut edge. This carbon was enough to activate the break. The students didn’t need to bring their own sausage.

I worked in a museum technical department and we had a Festool with a similar brake. We often would cut foil covered board (which was used for display work and was foiled to minimise off gassing from the wood. (This helps protect sensitive objects in cases/ enclosed environments). The foil covered wood set off the brake too. Luckily we had a couple of other saws we could use for that product.

I can understand how they activate based of moisture, capacitance , something . But what is impressive is how quickly it the blade is gone.
@Monkeh6162 ай бұрын
Capacitance is exactly it - unless they've changed the mechanism from the patent, they're basically coupling a signal across the blade, if you load the blade down with something capacitive or conductive to the table, it sees a loss of signal and triggers. If you run a sausage in without touching it, it won't trigger. Even wearing gloves to hold the sausage should be ample to defeat it. Of course, if it's your finger the moment it gets through the glove, away goes the blade. It moves away so fast because the brake pretty much directly converts the rotation of the blade into vertical motion. Saw throwing itself.

If there was a cordless model available, that would be ideal. I'm wondering if a corded table saw is still considered essential for the job site these days? I went to a dewalt cordless table saw just because it is quick to set up for the very limited number of times it is needed. The SawStop, however, is undoubtedly a safety standard that all tools should be working towards.
@FPL-LARD2 ай бұрын
there are also times its been known to lock when nothing was in danger and it costs a bob or 2 to replace, but as a safety feature it's second to none.

moisture in timber Robin also went through that in part 1 the guy said its remarkably uncommon, but either way i'd take that over it not activating when it should
@415volts2 ай бұрын
There is a feature to do a test cut with the brake de-activated if you think your timber is that wet. The saw will then let you know if it will activate due to the moisture conductivity.

Great video Rob, we all know by now it works! What we really want to know is how does its performance stack up against the rest! Yes they don’t have the same safety features but they are also a fraction of the price. I know safety first but given the patent expiration are we likely to start seeing cheaper options with the same tech.? And with the new safety bill that’s coming in in America are we likely to start seeing an influx of machines coming out and over the pond? Soooo many questionssssss

That really is great. Could they add this to other tools like spindle molders?
@415volts2 ай бұрын
A spindle moulder would probably need at least a huge 50kg lump of ali to stop it I reckon - due to tooling weight and inertia - that in itself would likely cause more dangers. It's a lot different to a saw blade spinning. Most commercial moulders I've seen are used with powerfeeds anyway for a uniform finish & of course safety.
@Spitfire67UK2 ай бұрын
@@415volts "at least 50kg" really, I doubt that. Feed wheels are great but no good for following a pattern.
@415volts2 ай бұрын
@@Spitfire67UK OK, 50kg was an exaggeration maybe - I haven't done the maths, but it would need a decent chunk to stop a heavy block in a split second for sure. Pattern following via ring fences of course are by hand - I have mainly encountered linear mouldings in commercial though.

Something about this Sawstop patent business sits sourly with me, and that's because it puts profit above safety, which is the wrong priority. Not necessarily a dig at Sawstop either but there are definitely some moral obligations not being triggered by either Sawstop or the lawyers. The nub of the problem is that the product is so damn good. And speaking of wellbeing, Robin, don't eat those sausages as they're highly processed food; best utilised for tool demos 😎🤙

How do they know if it was an activation that saved a digit, can’t get my head around how they’d know the difference
@pgtips42402 ай бұрын
Can we just be honest here. It's £80 plus a blade to get back up and running. He says if the data shows it was a finger activation you will get a free cartridge....? This is all good and well but this tells me that other things can trigger an activation and this to me atm is a deal breaker until I know what and how often it's going to be triggered. So can you just be completely open and honest with us as £80 plus a new blade after every activation is a lot of money. It's not a lot if it saves a finger bit it is a lot if it decides to activate because the timber moisture level is a bit high.

Sawstop sued Bosch when they bought out their own version. Sawstop should be ashamed of themselves for not letting other manufacturers from using their technology.

According to en.wikipedia.org/wiki/SawStop Bosch were infringing two patents, so suing is not unreasonable, though licensing would have been nicer. Looks like it may all be resolved soon...

Whilst I agree with the principle of what you’re saying, we need to understand SawStop have undoubtedly spent 00s of thousands possibly millions developing this technology, Bosch would have taken them to court if it was reverse roles. Im sure there’s nothing stopping Bosch from paying SawStop to use the technology, so were Bosch doing it on moral safety grounds or for extra money? Think we all know the answer to that.
